I've heard good things about Virex. I have a copy of Norton AV,
but that's because my employer has an uber license so it's free.
I don't leave it running -- it's a pig that slows my system.
I just use it for monthly updates.
The rest of the time, I rely on 3 products to keep me virus free:
1) Disinfectant -- deals with older Mac system virii.
2) Agax -- deals with new Mac system virii.
3) MS Word 5.1 -- deals with Word macro virii.
As long as I don't share unsafe Excel files, I'm in the clear.

I noticed something similar, until I turned off the feature that scans
every file when it's opened for viruses. To me, that's being almost
paranoid; if a virus doesn't come in, it won't get spread to other files
without my knowing about it (or, rather, without NAV knowing about it). I
do perform periodic (usually monthly) full scans, but otherwise I just let
NAV sniff out suspicious activity (which is usually me opening a
self-extracting archive or something :) ).
FWIW, there was one update (perhaps to NAV itself, rather than the monthly
"new viruses" updates) which turned the "scan every file on open" function
on after I had turned it off. It made startup horribly slow, until I
realized what must've happened. I turned it off again, and have pretty
much normal operation again.
