We have just upgaded to a NT server (from a apple server). We run NT
4 service pack 3, Apple system software 8.1 and use Diskdoubler pro
1.1. We have appleshare 3.7.4 running on several machines from a
lc475 to a PM 9500.We are having several problems.
1. We are having the Disk doubler icon jump onto files that are not
disk doubled. They are still quark, photoshop or illustrator files
but the creator and type both change to disk doubler files. We are
using a utillity called file buddy to change the creator and type
back to what they should be. With 32 GB of working files this is
becoming quite a pain.
2. We are having EOF errors on disk doubler files when they are being
expanded over the network on the server. We have this error on both
machines using 100 base T and 10 base T speeds over the network
through a network switch. If you coppy the file of the NT server to
the local mac hard disk, the files expand ok. It only seems to happen
if you are expanding in bulk or a batch. If we start expanding a
group of files and folders it seems to expand little files and some
large files then stop on a large file (2mb or more). If you then try
and expand this one file it got the EOF error on it works over the
network. To make it even more confusing the LC475 does not get EOF
errors at all. It expands very slow but it does work. I have checked
and the LC is running the same versions of software, extentions and
control panels.
3. Some disk doubler files are lossing there data and showing up a 0k
files. This has only happened to a few of them.
4. The disk double finder menu extention conflicts with system 8.1. I
have had to remove this from all my computers.
Is there any know incompatabilities with system 8.1 and NT 4. Is
there an update on its way or is this an application that symantic
has given up on.
Thanks

Hello Steven Whatman.
Norton DiskDoubler Pro is incompatible with and unsupported under OS
8.x. We have no plans to make changes to NDD Pro that will alter or
increase the existing, limited functionality but we do appreciate your
comments. Below are some notes about running NDD Pro under OS 8.x.
Keep in mind, however, that we do not recommend running NDD Pro with OS
8.x and we do not provide support for the configuration.
-CopyDoubler no longer works under OS8 and must be removed.
-The DiskDoubler(DD) Finder menu no longer works under OS8 and must be
removed.
-AutoDoubler (AD) works with the following caveats: it no longer
decompresses in the background. Instead, when AutoDoubler compressed
files are double-clicked, it will call the Disk Doubler (DD) program and
expand the file through that program in the foreground. Also, files
compressed automatically with AutoDoubler must be decompressed before
being copied to another volume. NOTE: Files compressed with the
DiskDoubler application will copy fine. Files expanded in this manner
won't automatically re-compress immediately after being closed, but they
will re-compress automatically when they fall under the set AD scheduled
compression time.
-DiskDoubler Expand (a freeware expander included with the Norton Disk
Doubler Pro program) continues to function under OS8 and can expand
files compressed with AutoDoubler or DiskDoubler (including archives or
.sea files).
-The DiskDoubler application can still create .sea or archive files but
you must run DiskDoubler manually rather then rely on the DD Finder menu
extension (as mentioned above).
If you are going to continue compressing files across an NT network I
might suggest using Stuffit since they have both a Mac an a Windows
client.
