Configuration Information:
Version: --Other--
Application: DiskDoubler
Operating system: System 8.0

I have been unable to get the pulldown menu for disk doubler v4.0 to
work on my power mac g3. I have gone through the steps of isolating
the extensions all the way down to base extensions and diskdoubler.
What occurs is when i try to click on any items in the menu my system
seems to restart the finder, all the files disappear then reappear
similar to a reboot but it locks into this cycle and must be either
soft booted or shut off.
are there any updates to disk doubler beyond v 4.0, or is there any
patches available?

Hello Rolf Sandvold,

Norton DiskDoubler Pro is incompatible with and unsupported under OS
8.x. We have no plans to make changes to NDD Pro that will alter or
increase the existing, limited functionality but we do appreciate your
comments. Below are some notes about running NDD Pro under OS 8.x.
Keep in mind, however, that we do not recommend running NDD Pro with OS
8.x and we do not provide support for the configuration.

-CopyDoubler no longer works under OS8 and must be removed.
-The DiskDoubler(DD) Finder menu no longer works under OS8 and must be
removed.
-AutoDoubler (AD) works with the following caveats: it no longer
decompresses in the background. Instead, when AutoDoubler compressed
files are double-clicked, it will call the Disk Doubler (DD) program and
expand the file through that program in the foreground. Also, files
compressed automatically with AutoDoubler must be decompressed before
being copied to another volume. NOTE: Files compressed with the
DiskDoubler application will copy fine. Files expanded in this manner
won't automatically re-compress immediately after being closed, but they
will re-compress automatically when they fall under the set AD scheduled
compression time.
-DiskDoubler Expand (a freeware expander included with the Norton Disk
Doubler Pro program) continues to function under OS8 and can expand
files compressed with AutoDoubler or DiskDoubler (including archives or
.sea files).
-The DiskDoubler application can still create .sea or archive files but
you must run DiskDoubler manually rather then rely on the DD Finder menu
extension (as mentioned above).

It seems a shame that after 10 years of using disk doubler, including
advocating its use to my clients, that symantec itself is making me
abandon it. I chose DD instead of Stuffit even though I received
Stuffit deluxe from the factory for free. Well Magic menu here I
come. I just purchased the new Norton Utilities, should I switch to
Techtool now?

Hello Rolf Sandvold,

We stopped updating DiskDoubler, because there really just wasn't a
market for it anymore (and it was getting smaller every month). That is
not meant as a slight to people who use DiskDoubler (I used to be one of
them). We will not stop updating Norton Utilities and Norton AntiVirus
because it is a big and growing market.
