Q&A is not designed specifically to work under Win 95 or 98. However,
it can be used with them for the most part, just like any other DOS
application can. However, there are some key compatibility issues
that you need to be aware of, that will affect Q&A.
These are:
1) Make sure you are launching Q&A for DOS under Win 95 with a
proper Win 95 shortcut.
To make a Win 95 shortcut for Q&A for DOS, just use the Windows
Explorer to open up the folder that contains your Q&A software. Then
drag the file QA.COM from that folder onto your desktop. To then
launch Q&A under Windows 95 properly, simply double-click on that
icon. That is generally all you have to do as far as setting it up.
2) If you get a DIVIDE error message when trying to run Q&A
for DOS, this is happening due to the fast speed of your computer's
CPU, and not because of Windows 95. This problem is not all that
unusual for DOS programs to run into on the very latest and fastest
computers.
Fortunately, there are some public domain utility programs that can
be used with Q&A to slow down your CPU to 200 Mhz for the Q&A
application only. One of these is the program MO'SLO.EXE You can find
a link to download this program from the National Q&A User Group's
web site. So do be sure to
check out their web pages, as they have lots of good information
there at:
http://www.qaug.com/qainfo.htm
Just run the file after downloading to unzip both the utility, as
well as a documentation file on how to use it. This is not software
that Symantec has developed or provide tech support for. But it is a
popular utility for solving this problem with older DOS programs
running on today's fast
computers.
3) Another compatibility issue you need to be aware of is that
Q&A can have problems with larger sized disk volumes. Q&A should only
be used with a hard disk volume that is no more than 1.85 Gigabytes
in size. If used with a larger sized disk volume, Q&A can become
confused and think the volume is out of disk space, when it is not.
So if you don't have a partition that small, you will need to
partition your hard drive to give Q&A a volume that size or smaller
to work with.
A very popular utility program that allows users to easily adjust and
manage their hard drive partitions is a program called Partition
Magic. So if you find you ever would like to adjust your hard drive
partitions, and would like to be able to avoid having to back
everything back up and reformat in order to do that, their software
can help out very well. Feel free to visit their web site at:
Good luck and if you need Networking info, more can be find at the
Symantec site.

We just upgraded our server and 3 machines to 300Mhz Pentiums with
large drives. Q&A seemed to be working fine. Today, we got the
message that we did not have any more room on the hard drive. From
what I just read, it seems we will have to set up a partition or
volume on our server to be smaller than 1.8Gigs or so. We only need
about 100megs so I don't mind. But we do network 4.0. Will this
solve our problems? Do we just have to set up a smaller volume? Our
Network guy and long time customer will handle this but do you think
this sounds OK?
Thanks for any help you can give.

Hi Fred,
NEVER start Q&A for DOS with QA1.EXE, as this is bypassing a vital part of
the program. QA.COM loads QA1.EXE, so it is very important to use QA.COM
to start the program. The issues with large hard drives and fast cpu's
will cause numerous different types of problems. The information Curtis
provided is correct, please follow those requirements and Q&A will run fine
under Windows 95/98.
Hope you are having a great day!
