Hi John,
Sorry about the hold times, we did have some people out.
This is actually damage in the database. This error 06a1 is letting us
know there is a piece internally that the no longer accessable. Depending
on when the error occures it may be within the data or just the structure.
The Reindexing proccess will ensure the database is internally clean. If
you can get into the retrieve spec then copy design only should work. If
the copy design only does not work then go back to an older backup copy
until you find one that works. For the data I recommend using the
export/import instead of the copy selected records in the reindexing
procedure.
We have a very detailed article in our online KnowledgeBase all about how
to repair a damaged Q&A database. It has complete instructions all about
how to reindex one. You can get this document online at this address:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/qa1.nsf/docid/199731962848
If you receive errors in these steps or do not have a recent backup here
are some other options.
We have a utility that will get the data and general structure information
called QEXTRACT. If the earlier steps in this article do not help, and you
find it necessary to download our QEXTRACT data recovery utility, that can
be downloaded at this address:
ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/products/q&a/ver4_dos/update
s/qextra.exe
Besides Symantec's data recovery utility, there is also a popular third
party utility called DTFDOCTR by a programmer named John Dow. It has many
advanced features for repairing damaged Q&A databases. If you would like
to learn more about this software, feel free to visit the following web
page:
Symantec does have a data recovery service where for a fee you can ship us
a copy of the database, and we will have a trained data recovery technician
work on recovering it for you.
If you would like to learn all the details about this service and how to
contact us to repair a database, go to this web page at:

There are different problems one can run into in running Q&A 4.0 or 5.0 for
DOS under Windows 95/98 with new computers.
The "DIVIDE" error message is most commonly caused by using Q&A with a
computer that has a real fast CPU. If your computer is faster than 200Mhz,
then this well could be your problem. This problem is not all that unusual
for DOS programs to run into on the very latest and fastest computers.
Fortunately, there is a utility program that can be used with Q&A to slow
down your CPU to 200 Mhz for the Q&A application only. The program is
called MO'SLO.EXE The National Q&A User Group's web site has a link that
takes you to the vendor for this program. So do be sure to check out this
web site, as they have lots of good information there about Q&A. Go to
this address to find out about this MO'SLO program:
http://www.qaug.com/qainfo.htm
Just run the file after downloading to unzip both the utility, as well as a
documentation file on how to use it. This is not software that Symantec
has developed or provides any tech support for. But it is a popular
utility for solving this problem with older DOS programs running on today's
fast computers.
For customers using Q&A 5.0 for DOS, there is also a patch file called
SPEEDFIX on the Q&A User group web site, that is designed to fix this issue
for that version of Q&A for DOS. Please note that this patch was not
created by Symantec, so we can offer no warranty at all regarding its
usage.
Another compatibility issue you need to be aware of is that Q&A can have
problems with the latest Windows 95 disk format, and it can especially have
problems with larger sized disk volumes. Q&A should only be used with a
standard FAT volume that is no more than 1.85 Gigabytes in size. So if you
don't have a partition that small, you will need to repartition your hard
drive to give Q&A a volume that size or smaller to work with.
A very popular utility program that allows users to easily adjust and
manage their hard drive partitions is a program called Partition Magic. So
if you find you ever would like to adjust your hard drive partitions, and
would like to be able to avoid having to back everything back up and
reformat in order to do that, their software can help out very well. Feel
free to visit their web site at:
So if you use the MO'SLOW utility to slow down your CPU, and repartition
your hard drive so you have a compatible disk volume to run Q&A under, then
you should be able to continue to successfully use Q&A on a new computer.
Hope you are having a great day!
