Anti-virus program not installing

Please help,

I am attempting to install Norton Anti-virus, however; during the
installation process, I seem to have the same continuous problem. It will
begin to install the program, and approximately 3/4 of the way through, it
reads: "Gathering information", however, at this point the PC freezes, and
no longer continues to download.

It will not allow for the complete installation of the program. Also, I have
completely removed all other anti-virus installation that I previously had
on the PC.

I am running "Windows Vista Home Premium, 32 bit"
