Norton Ghost 2004 big problem cloning....help?

Hi I did a stupid thing. I decided to transfer my notebook hard disk
files to an external hard drive so I could format and reinstall XP OS back
on because the OS was becoming unstable and I wanted to save my files for
reloading. I thought that when I cloned the data over to the external hard
drive it would place it in the blank areas of the drive as it had plenty of
free space to work with, however the files I had on that drive do not show
anymore; just the cloned ones! This was my backup drive for all my data.
Does anyone know how I can recover my old files and return this hard drive
back to its former glory?
