Modifying default sql query

I have a table in a grid that has the default SELECT * line in the
table. What I need to find a way to do is have a choice button
(choice1) with numbers in it. I would then modify the SELECT by
adding a WHERE field = the value of choice1.

How can I do this? Any ideas for alternatives?
