When I replace Ghost Explorer from Ghost 2003, v2003.0.0.775, with v7.0.0.245 from Ghost
Enterprise v7 Ghost Explorer does not crash.
The crash seems to occur when I open a GHO file and try select more than one directory to
copy data out of the image. Selecting just one directory from the image and copying it then
pasting it to the destination location does not crash Ghost Explorer. When I use Ghost
Explorer, v7.0.0.245, and replicate the process, I have no problems selecting multiple
directories then copying them and pasting them to their destination to location.
The actual error message is "Norton Ghost Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to
close"
Has anybody else seen problems with Ghost 2003's Ghost Explorer on WinXP SP2 ?
Dave
I am fighting problems with Ghost 2003, Ghost Explorer
and WinXP with SP1 installed but NOT SP2.
My problems sound more fundamental than yours. I do a backup (using
the Backup Wizard) to an external HD with an image integrity check
and all works fine (Ghost reports success and log has no errors)
When I go to open the image file(s) in Ghost Explorer I get the
error:
"Unable to open image file segment 2 - Please change the disk or
cartridge"
If I go and repeat the image integrity check it now fails.
I have tried this on various partition sizes and the error is always
for image file segment 2. If the backup is small enough to not
have a image segment 2 then it works fine.

The file segment 2 is the first GHS file ?
Lets see if I get this about right...
Lets say you have a hard disk or partition that's 10GB.
You create a Ghost image. Lets sat the first part of the image is called DRIVEC.GHO and is
2GB
It then creates a second file called DRIVEC001.GHS that is less than 2GB.
So on the 10GB drive you have two files...
DRIVEC.GHO
DRIVEC001.GHS
When you try to extract data from the image using Ghost Explorer you point it to
DRIVEC001.GHS but it keeps on indicating "Unable to open image file segment 2" ???

The backup that failed with Ghost Explorer had a
total of 5 files the name.gho file and name001.GHS
through name004.GHS. I had also done a backup with
only two files a *.gho and *001.GHS and that worked
and I just tried one with three files and that worked
also. This is the one I expected to fail if it was
the second *002.GHS file that was a problem. In all of
the above all the files except the last one were
2.097 GB and the last is variable size up to 2.097GB
to account for the size of the backup
The other strange thing with the 5 file backup is that
this is the only backup that Explorer asked me to select
the file for the last segment. All of the others when
I ran Ghost Explorer I simply opened the name.gho file
and that was it. I am wondering why there is a need to
identify the file for the last segment when running Ghost
Explorer? Shouldn't the program be able to figure that
out since the file names were chosen by the backup
program.

I find short names cause it to ask for the last segment.
Try that 10GB image sized backup with a longer name like; My-Platform

Here is the stange thing. If I do the larger backup
(5 backup files around 10 GB) to another partition
on my primary disk, Ghost Explorer is able to open all
the files with no problem. If I copy those same files
to my external USB 2.0 HD, then Explorer fails to open
them with the original error: "Unable to open image file
segment 2. Please change the disk or cartridge".
For both of this above cases it prompts for the name
of file of the last segment.
