using xml for translations

The last time i looked, yaml was used for translation files.

I want to suggest to use xml (xliff) because it is a more standard format and there exist already some tools to work with it.

Yeah *.yml looks like a shortcut, I agree that we should move to something that is kind of standard format. Thanks for bringing this up, if you have any spare time to convert existing files to xliff, that would be awesome, if not, no problemo, I'll work on this as soon as I have time!

Best tool for translation IMO is gettext. And Poedit looks like best editor which works on all platforms. Symfony just got contribution from drupal for better gettext support.

One of nice feature of Poedit which can be helpful when translating is references, which can directly link you to templates or any resource where phrase is used, so you can check in which context it is used.

Only question is how to parse templates and extract messages. I used translation:update command for yaml. But I think https://github.com/michelsalib/BCCExtraToolsBundle can do the job.

The JMSTranslation bundle http://jmsyst.com/bundles/JMSTranslationBundle also supports extraction of translation messages and can create xliff.
Wordforge is a great tool to handle the xliff translations, can also import PO btw.

I was told, that the xliff format (please differentiate between tool and formate) is similar popular to gettext.

I think gettext is great too, but it was designed for desktop use. So we have a problem, when we want to use the gettext implementation of php, because its not thread-safe and relies on the global (system width?) localization variable.
As long, as Symfony2 has no own interpreter for gettext, we should stay away from this format when creating web applications.
Sure, i cant prove any problems, but the risk for problems is to hight for me.
