This textbook provides a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in otolaryngology, discussing all the newly advances in the subspecialties of head and neck, plastics, otology, laryngology, rhinology and pediatrics, and also addressing topics like allergy, sleep medicine, trauma, and the fundamentals of systemic diseases that frequently manifest in the head and neck region.

The book is divided into 9 sections, presenting the recent literature concerning all the subspecialties in otolaryngology and providing the information necessary for readers to gain an understanding of the field of otolaryngology.

Each chapter includes definitions, key points and take-home messages, to aid learning. Throughout the book, tips and key features are highlighted with boxes, tables and figures, which the reader can refer back to for quick revision. Above all, the book enables medical students, residents and junior specialists in the field of ENT to develop their learning and surgical skills.

Abdulsalam Al Qahtani is Head of the Otolaryngology, Head and Neck section, Department of Surgery at Hamad Medical Corporation and Head of the Qatari Cochlear Implant Program. Dr. Al Qahtani was appointed as Director of the ORL-HNS Residency Program at HMC in 2005. Along with his team, he has been organizing the Qatari review course in ORL-HNS since 2006. This course prepares residents for the Arab board examination and attracts participants from across the Middle East. He is also a board member of the Arab Academy of Audiology and a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council Otolaryngology Society, which promotes cooperation between otolaryngology surgeons in the Arabian Gulf region, especially in educational activities. Also, he is a Board member of the Qatar Red Crescent Society.

Hassan Haidar Ahmad is currently a Consultant in ENT, Head and Neck Surgery at Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar and Assistant Professor of Clinical Otolaryngology at the Medical College of Weill Cornell University. He is also the Program Director of the Otology fellowship program at Hamad Medical Corporation in Qatar. He received his medical degree from the Lebanese University in 2006, his Diploma in Microscopic and Endoscopic Surgery of the Base of Skull at Aix-Marseille University, Marseille, and his Diploma of Specialization in Otolaryngology from the Lebanese University in 2011. In 2013 he obtained his Diploma of Advanced Specialization in Otolaryngology (DFMS/AFS) from Aix-Marseille University, and completed his Sub-specialization Fellowship (Otology - Neurotology) at Nord University Central Hospital, APHM, Marseille, France.

"We think this book will be very helpful for all clinicians but particularly for two groups: first, those in training or starting out, when they do not have a lot of clinical experience; and second, practitioners with subspecialty expertise and focus who occasionally see patients with other problems," Dr. Stewart said. "If an otology specialist sees a patient with a throat problem or neck mass, this book can be a quick refresher on a topic they have not thought about recently."

"The book uses an enhanced decision-tree model," Dr. Selesnick said. "There are textbooks with good information, but the design makes the information in the text relatively inaccessible. So we worked hard to improve the cross-referencing and the decision-tree matrix. For example you can start with "nasal obstruction" or a "sore throat" and can then follow the decision tree to the best diagnosis, which is briefly explained to the reader."

The National Certifying Board of Otorhinolaryngology and Head-Neck Nurses (NCBOHN) endorses the concept of voluntary, periodic certification by examination for all otorhinolaryngology and head-neck registered nurses. Certification is one part of a process called credentialing. It focuses specifically on the individual and is an indication of current competence in a specialized area of practice. Board certification in otorhinolaryngology and head-neck nursing is highly valued and provides formal recognition of basic otorhinolaryngology and head-neck nursing knowledge.

Announced at the 46th Annual Fall Congress and Symposium, SOHN is developing an electronic-only 3rd Edition with an intended release date of November 2022. Preorders for this 3rd Edition are also available below.

Basic Otorhinolaryngology: A Step-by-Step Learning Guide, Second Edition, is an accessible introduction to the core concepts and potentially complex interrelationships in otorhinolaryngology and head and neck surgery. The fully revised new edition includes latest developments and up-to-date terminology, up-to-date diagnostic and treatment methods, and succinct overviews of important international consensus documents and position papers in the field. The book presents material in an engaging and user-friendly format, with chapters divided into study units that follow a consistent structure. Readers will also find a wealth of figures, tables, and flowcharts to facilitate quick comprehension of topics.

Basic Otorhinolaryngology: A Step-by-Step Learning Guide, Second Edition, is an essential resource for ENT residents and trainees, residents and trainees in related specialties, and students on rotation. Its breadth of coverage and easy-to-learn format makes the book ideal for course or exam preparation, and will also serve as a useful reference source.

First written by Philip Stell and Arnold Maran in 1972, Stell & Maran's Textbook of Head and Neck Surgery and Oncology has been revised in both content and approach over the years to reflect the enormous progress made in the area. Now in its fifth edition, the book remains a key textbook for trainees in otolaryngology and head and neck surgery.

Written with a strong multidisciplinary approach, the book has expanded considerably to include the expertise of international editors and contributing authors from a wide variety of backgrounds, including ENT, radiotherapy, plastic surgery, and maxillofacial surgery.

As a first text for trainee head and neck and ENT surgeons or as a reference source for practitioners in a variety of related fields, Stell & Maran's Textbook of Head and Neck Surgery and Oncology remains the best-illustrated and most up-to-date volume in its field.

Putting together this textbook has been truly enjoyable. Amidst the grey cloud of the COVID-19 pandemic, our silver lining has been a reminder of how wonderfully diverse, evolving and stimulating our specialty is. We look forward to the positive impact of our readership on the future of otorhinolaryngology.

The editors of the Eighth Edition of the title Scott-Brown's Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery, John C Watkinson & Raymond W Clarke, answer our questions about the book and share the reason why they got involved with the latest edition of this textbook.
