Welcome to ELDEN RING, a game that allows you to explore the high fantasy realm of the Lands Between. This vast continent is full of excitement and challenging adventures. It is certainly possible to take on the quest to unite this land and become the Elden Lord on your own, but that is not your only option. There is a rich multiplayer system available to you if you play online, and this article will help you learn how to use it.
For most players, getting started with multiplayer means inviting another player into their game to play alongside them cooperatively. You can invite a specific friend who is playing on the same platform or, if you prefer, try inviting a random person who has turned on their cooperative multiplayer mode. You can have up to two cooperative guests in your game at a time.
For another player to join you cooperatively, you must both be in approximately the same area of the game. For example, near the same site of lost grace. The player who wants to join you will need to use the Tarnished Furled Finger to place a golden sign on the ground. At the same time, you should use a Furled Finger Remedy. After a few moments, their golden sign should appear at the same location in your game. When the sign appears, walk up to it and interact with it to bring the other player into your game. Repeat the process for a second player if needed.
A guest player will remain in your game until certain conditions have been met. If you or your guest is killed, they will need to place another sign to return to your game. You can also remove guests from your game by using the Finger Severer item.
Aside from death, disinvitation, or internet interruption, the other condition that will end a cooperative session is the defeat of an enemy that is considered a boss or mini-boss. Usually, this type of enemy can be found beyond a fog barrier, but there are also wandering bosses and mini-bosses that can be encountered in the open world areas.
When you activate cooperative multiplayer as a host or as a guest, you have the chance to run into competitive visitors, also known as invaders. Invaders are randomly summoned to join the game of a host with one explicit goal: kill the host.
Because of this possible two-vs-one or three-vs-one situation, invading can be quite difficult. However, you have some tools you can use to balance the scales a bit. For example, as an invader you are immune to aggro from all monsters and bosses. You can join groups of attacking monsters to strengthen your position and help fend off the guests as you try to take down the host.
By including a password in your game settings, you will only see golden or red signs from other players who use that exact same password in their own settings. The password is case sensitive. Setting a password will not prevent you from being invaded by random players when summoning cooperatively.
Additionally, you can set a Group Password. A Group Password will prioritize bringing other players with the same Group Password into your world, both as cooperative guests and also as invaders. You can use a Group Password to have a greater chance of randomly invading your friends!
Group Passwords will also try to show you red and gold signs, bloodstains, spirits, and messages from others with the same password, and those interactive elements will have a special ring indicating that they are pulled from your group.
The game offers a free Upgrade to PS5 for players who purchase the PS4 version and supports Smart Delivery for Xbox, allowing players to play on both Xbox One and Xbox Series XS with a single purchase.
To bring it back to IPFire, I am wondering if it is possible I get some of the multiplayer features because they come from a central server, and do not get the other features because it tries to broker some kind of peer-to-peer connection that is blocked by IPFire? Is that possible? How could I diagnose what is happening and potentially come up with a solution?
(Note that multiplayer in Elden Ring is bizarre and has many conditions on working properly to begin with. Hopefully you can take my word that everything to do with in-game settings have been exhaustively tried. That said, I am open to trying in-game settings changes.)
I could not find anything like this phrasing in /var/log/messages. Just to be on the safe side I also ran zgrep "nf_conntrack" messages.*, no hits. I did find a ton of additional DROP_CTINVALID going from green source to red destination. Occasionally these are paired with DROP_NEWNOTSYN to the same source+destination.
Sorry for the very late reply! I did more anecdotal testing - there is no noticeable delay at this point beyond the normal matchmaking. It is a little difficult to know if the upgrade to 167 made a difference, but in any case this issue is resolved now. Thanks for the help to all who responded!
This Elden Ring Save lets you freely choose your level and build to play multiplayer anywhere in the Lands Between! Every item has been legitimately acquired through either gameplay acquisition or player trading. All you need to is launch the game with the save file and have fun!
This page includes instructions on how to participate in Elden Ring multiplayer, including helping other players in co-op, getting other players to help you, or even invade, antagonize, and fight other players.
If you use a White Cipher Ring, you will automatically request for a hunter from another world to come to your rescue when your world is invaded (can also be used after you are invaded). The hunter will be summoned once the request succeeds, and their objective is to defeat the invader of your world.
If you use a Blue Cipher Ring, you will make yourself open to summons for rescue from other worlds. The multiplayer session will begin once you have been summoned as a hunter, and your objective is to defeat the invader of that world. The compass at the top of the screen indicates the direction of the summoner (Host of Fingers).
Elden Ring co-op multiplayer is a bit tricky to set up, requiring various in-game steps to let you play with friends or with random players online, but it's worth it. The game includes both an Elden Ring PVP mode, as well as bringing in various NPC Elden Ring Summons, but this is all about the most important version of multiplayer - when you're struggling to take down a boss and you want somebody to come in and help you, you need to know what to do - and with that in mind, here's how you can play Elden Ring co-op multiplayer, either with friends or with random players.
To play Elden Ring multiplayer with friends, players will need to jump through a few hoops first, as co-op has its own limitations and requires a bit of set-up. First of all, online multiplayer obviously requires all players to have their device connected to the internet, but console players will also need the relevant subscription service for online play, such as PS Plus. Elden Ring also does not have crossplay between different platforms but consoles in the same family can play together - for example, PS4 and PS5 players can play together but PS5 and PC or Xbox Series X players cannot.
With that sorted, you can get into co-op play. Elden Ring online multiplayer has one player act as a "Host of Fingers," and everybody else then joins their world as a phantom player, effectively assisting the host with whatever it is they're doing. Here's what you and your friends need to do:
Elden Ring co-op supports up to three players at a time; one Host of Fingers and two golden Phantoms to support them. As mentioned, crossplay is also not a supported feature, unfortunately.
It's also important to know that players brought into Elden Ring as co-op golden Phantoms aren't quite as powerful as they are in their own world. They have half the number of Flasks that they normally would and their stats are generally weakened so as to stop two high-level players from stomping all over the bosses for their lower-level friend - basically, other players aren't supposed to do the fight for you, just help out a bit.
You also can't play Elden Ring co-op for the whole game, or at least, not all in one go, as co-op can only be triggered with a specific goal in mind - aka, the boss of the area. Wherever the Host triggers the Martyr Effigy, that effectively makes the whole area into a mission. For example, if the hosts bring players into Stormveil Castle, the goal is to destroy the Castle boss, Godrick the Grafted. Once this is done, the mission is over and Phantoms are sent back to their own games. You'll need to find another effigy if you want to summon friends again.
For players who are happy to be summoned by anybody to lend a hand, you can use a multiplayer menu item called the Tarnished's Furled Finger, right next to the Small Golden Effigy. This simply places down a gold symbol where the player is standing, one that appears in random players' games and can be triggered by them.
