Will the laser cutter work with 9mm marine plywood?

I think it's unlikely, but it really depends on the particular wood. If it's a softwood ply, then you *may* be able to cut it with multiple passes.

It might be a challenge, but to give it the best chance:

Perform a variety of well documented (speed, power, passes, etc) test cuts first, because it's hard to improve what you don't measure.
Crank the nozzle pressure as high as possible. (hooking up an air-compressor to achieve higher nozzle pressures might not be a bad idea but check with Max or Gav first)
Use fast moving multiple passes.

Still not working?
Try adjusting the Z axis as you progress through multiple passes.

Still not working?
Build a jig that enables you to partially cut one side then flip the sheet over while maintaining alignment and cut the other side (while also flipping the design and maintaining software alignment as well).

Still not working?
Take it to a commercial laser shop like Plastix* and their laser will breeze through it.
