Frank Sinatra, right? He is the bomb.

Anyway, Tomorrow puts us a week out of the Robots and Dinosaurs inaugural RC fly-in/drive about, and I have a feeling a lot of you aren't going to be involved. Frank would be very disappointed (the singer, not the hacker). So far I think I have counted 6 planes that have been ordered since my last email for the day, at least 3 members are giving it a go for the first time and a few old hats have new toys and old! It will be great fun when we get a few int eh air at the same time!

There's still plenty of time to pick up some kit from the Aussie Hobbyking warehouse if you are keen, or just express interest and you can have a go at flying someone else's pride and joy on the day! Even if you aren't interested in flying, I know Frank (the hacker, not the singer) at least is interested in how the servos and the Tx/Rx stuff works, and how it can be used with micro controllers and other projects, on Saturday morning there should be a few people putting finishing touches on their birds!

I just got back from flying my $5 scratch built plane(that I rebuilt after Mondays tragedy) and it's great! while not as easy as a good foam trainer it flies (relatively) straight and isn't going to upset too many people if you bury it in the ground so if you are too worried about the impending doom of learning to fly this one is for you!! If you prefer the "true hacker spirit" of building your own plane, it's easy and only takes a few hours the first time. You can buy enough components for it from the Australian warehouse for around $60, including the transmitter, and if you don't like flying then the gear is always useful for robotics and other hacking projects.

Attached is some terrible footage of the coroplast plane flying tonight :) I am planning to make a bigger wing for it over the weekend to make it a little more stable and fly a bit slower so it should be great for learners!

I've ordered my plane! Fingers crossed it arrives just in time for me to crash it into the ground!

I've been trying to work out what to get that will arrive in time for the big day

I've narrowed it down to these two:

Wilga 2000 $79

and

Big Scale J3 Cub EPS 1500mm $82 but needs ESC, motor, 4 servos and battery.

The Wilga has the advantage that I can get all the bits from the .au site (it only needs a battery)

The Big Scale J3 seems to need parts that aren't available from the .au warehouse.

I'm about to place the order for the Wilga - any thoughts before I do? Anyone else want one while I am at it?

I ordered from the AU warehouse on Tues and the bits arrived today so there's a good chance you will get it within 3 days anyway. But dont stress too much about it, we will have these RC days on a regular basis if I have any say about it, because i wont be able to bring all of my toys to this one :)

Have you flown before? The wilga is nice plane but from reading the reviews I think that there a few problems with its strength. You are probably going to need to reinforce it quite a lot. That means you're going need a carbon spar (which you can pick at any hobbystore, and some superglue. The hobbyking stuff is quite good and cheap too.  You also need a battery (i suggest 2) + charger and a 4ch remote.

If you have never flown before, the wilga is also an aileron plane which means its a step above a beginners plane, coupled with the report of a weak wings, I think your flying day is going to be very short.

I suggest that you have a consider a wind dragon. It comes with a beginners wing and a aileron wing for when you are feeling a bit more confident.

Better yet if you are willing to wait or get it from the international warehouse, get a Bixler. The Bixler is a REALLY good plane.. ask Tim.

hey where is the airfield for this? i think i'd like to come down and have sticky beak at it all
(if that's ok)
Also, not sure if it's relelvent, but here:
http://snipurl.com/23kcw62 (google maps)
is field of mars and this bit is in a dip which means low wind... if you wanted a place to test something youv'e built at the space
it's a car or bycycle ride away though.

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the advice, unfortunately I couldn't wait and I bought the
Wilga earlier today.

And I've never flown before - oh well, as you say, it might be a very
short day. :)

It's ok Jason, James McGill grabbed a wilga after much deliberation online, I think it will make a great first plane. We will make sure to grab some carbon rods before you fly to spec it up. Have a look at the reviews on the international warehouse model, they are great (and sold out)

Did you get a some batteries for it? And a transmitter?

I can't wait to see the plane, I think they look real nice on the website. The ailerons are a little trickier but I think we'll set some transmitters up on a trainer mode for any new people who are worried.

I hope the weather is good!

I've bought them from the hobbystore in Hornsby a few times, I think it was about $6 for a 6mm tube or something like that. 6mm should be enough to make it nice and strong.

Yeah Jason, it will be fine. There will be plenty of people there with experience to help you which counts more than anything. It is a good plane and very pretty too, I would get one myself too if I didnt have so many projects already. :)

Jason - I recommend getting your hands on Phoenix RC (or similar) if
you can. I just spent 2 hours landing a plane over and over. My first
50 attempts ended pretty badly. Now I can do it fairly reliably -
hopefully it works as well in the real world.

Question for experienced folk - do you cut throttle entirely when landing?

James

Yep, I think we'll meet early at the flying field for all those who already have their plane set up, and then hit the space for a few hours and build/re-build and then back to the field after lunch to try again!

That seemed to work yesterday, hopefully the weather is as good next weekend.

Yep. Is 330 late enough? That would give us ~90 standard earth minutes.

Will we have another Tuesday hack day?  If people can set up their new planes Tuesday then they can meet us at the park at 9 am for round 1! I think I will have art last 1 plane I will use as a trainer/sacrifice for people to try before using their new planes.

(maybe a Thursday hack day is preferable if a planes are running late? )

I think it would be unfair to try to assemble planes on Wednesday because the robot builders are getting ready for supernova and there won't be enough space

Thursday night construction sounds like a pretty solid plan, I'll open be there from just after 5 to open the space.  And 3:30 afternoon flight on Sat (w/ 9am early bird options) sounds like a good idea too.

I've just got the PDF with the build instructions for this:

Which looks cool. Think I'll try cutting one and giving it a try. Also, I'll have some radio controllable LED headlights done at some point, and happy to set people up with the code for night flying :-D

Is anyone building a car/hovercraft/boat/anything not a plane still?!?!?!

So I received the box for the plane in the post, but its missing the
batteries and charger that I ordered at the same time. all was ordered
from the .au warehouse of hobbyking

does HK ship in multiple consignments sometimes?

The order on the HK site says all items are "Reserved" which in their
terms means they have received payment for them and items are reserved
waiting shipment.

Any ideas?

It took weeks before I was able to fly my plane with out breaking it long enough to use up all my batteries. 3 should be fine :)

That said, the first time you bring in your plane in to land on the last battery, and you are forced to pack up an go home not because you broke something, but because you ran out of power is a great day!!

Argh! the weather has turned... current report says it will be windy on Saturday. I don't know what that means (in terms of speed) but generally any wind is bad. :(

That makes it incredibly hard to fly planes! If it is anything more that a breeze then I would suggest all shiny new planes stay on the ground. If we are there at 9 we might get lucky as the wind usually picks up through the day, but it still might be blown out.

Only thing we can do is make a call on the day and reschedule! Hopefully someone involved lives close enough to the space/field to give us a heads up around 8 so we can call it before everyone leaves for the field. Any volunteers?

Like a few others, I’ve been stalking this forum for a while but
figured it’s time to come down to meet and greet you all.
After procrastinating long enough, I bought a Turnigy 9X from Hobby
King (knowing there will be a wait till its shipped) to keep me
entertained through Winter until both the weather and my flying skills
have improved enough to not crash any potential plane/helicopter I end
up getting.
If the weather is still shocking tomorrow, will people still be
bringing their planes/ect to the space for show and tell?

I think I still have 4 planes I left at the space, and I think Ada has more than that!... Unless it is blowing a gale then I will (try) to fly one of my homebrew planes, they only take an hour or so to rebuild so I don't mind trashing them.

Justin no better way to learn than to start crashing planes! even if you buy foam planes they are pretty easy to repair and cheap enough that learning to fly isn't such a daunting task.

Will just have to wait for the weather report tomorrow!

but that could be possums.
the radar loop says it coming from the NNW at 19kmh so it might be muted in the park...

is it too windy?
I have spent most of this week bouncing a cheap helicopter into expensive ornaments in the lounge.

Where is this flying field so I can come down on Saturday and watch?

Thanks

Thanks for the explanation Ada!

What's the upper bounds on wind speed for beginner flying? 5 knots? less?

Every knot above zero is less fun for beginners. (unless your flying slope soarers)

Look at the trees, if the wind is bending branches imagine what it will do with 400g of foam...

A steady breeze is OK, but gusting wind is terrible.

i am at the field again, it is still too windy to fly.

and the reason i am here again is that i think i left my Asus transformer tablet here on the grass. either that or it was stolen this morning while i wasnt paying attention. :(

It can happen, friend of mind lost his pushbike which was lying at the side of the football field he was playing on at the time.
And it's not like there was a crowd of spectators.

Are you sure its not in your car, and or does it have a sim or gps chip in it.

worst case (not 3g, no sim, no app running like Google latitude) you can keep an eye out for people taking pictures with it.
all you need is one or more pictures that you have taken with it.

Well, since the weather here is always almost perfect for flying, I went "flying" yesterday!!
Here's what happened:
Everything held up ok, except for a single propeller, which I think is great for how hard it came down.

thanks. yes, its my own stupidity that lost it. unfortunately, the only protection is the screenlock. I have Lookout on it but it wont work without wifi internet. so i hope the screenlock pattern is strong enough to force whoever has it to wipe it.

Oooo I forget to add, do go to the local cop shop and ask if anyone handed it in.
Its worth the effort.
Nearest decent police station is gladesville. But there may be a smaller shop front near the field.

If we're not going to fly, I may as well spend the day learning to
read TAF. Here's the latest update:

TAF TAF YSBK 261652Z 2618/2712
27005KT CAVOK
FM262300 21010KT 9999 FEW040
RMK
T 08 08 14 18 Q 1018 1019 1021 1019

And my attempt to read it:

TAF report from YSBK station at 16:52 GMT (3am local time?) on the 26th.
Wind: Bearing 270 degrees, 5 Knots. Ceiling and visibility are OK

From 26:23 10 Knots at 210 degrees. Visibility 10KM or more. A few
clouds at 4000 (ft?)

I'm not sure what the 2616/2712 or T 08 08 14 18 Q 1018 1019 1021 1019
sequence mean. Any ideas?

James

They probably just throw that in to mess with you James!

Today looks like a good day to fly! I'm busy all day though :( We ended up flying yesterday though, the wind dropped enough by the afternoon for a few of us to risk our birds, I'm sorry to report none survived the day...

hopefully i can get the morning of next weekend to try again!

Tim.

a TAF isn't a report, it's a forecast. if you want a current report,
you need to look at the METAR (on the same page from air services
australia). so the1652Z is the time of issuance of the forecast, and
2618 (so 4am) to 2712 (10pm) is the period of validity of the
forecast.

YSBK is bankstown. All of the sydney stations are YS (so YSSY, YSBK, YSCN).

excellent.

2623 is 2300 GMT on the 26th, so 9am on sunday local time.

040 is 4000 ft, yes. it's essentially a flight level, but those start
at 10000 ft. (flight levels are encoded at 101.3 kPa; altitudes
below that are encoded at local pressure.)

> I'm not sure what the 2616/2712 or T 08 08 14 18 Q 1018 1019 1021 1019

2616/2712 is validity time.

T x y z o is the temperature through the validity period.
Q x y z o is the local air pressure (in hPa) through the validity period.

Had fun regardless of the blow out for planes ! We should try that
again in a months time... weather dependant naturally. Keen to get my
little flying wing going now. :)
