Hi all!

I am in the planning stages of a small personal project that will be a gift and I'm hoping your lovely space might be the perfect place to get it done!

The short of it is that I am putting together a custom bound book and will need to laser engrave some leather. The leather will be attached to a piece of book board with some plywood accent pieces underneath and will be glued down by wheat paste at this stage.

I'm hoping this sounds like something I can manage with your equipment. I originally reached out to my local library's maker space to use their little xtool and got told I couldn't use any materials they hadn't purchased and was limited to 3 & 6mm plywood and some acrylic. I found this awesome looking space in my research of a backup plan.

Hi,

I'm curious which library and which xtool they had :)

There's also taylor street creative space that probably has the same tools that can help you too as another backup option.

I'll definitely check out that space too thanks! I didn't realise we had so many spaces in Sydney. I would have killed for access to all of this as a kid 🤣

I reached out to my local library out here in Campbelltown and the one out in Rhodes. Both had the same response on being able to bring your own materials and flat out refused. Didn't want to elaborate on what models they have either. From memory when i went out just after they opened the space Campbelltown town has a P2.

I think its a less an issue with what the xtool can do and more an issue with government safety guidelines on their end. They did offer to start the process on adding leather to their material list but had no time frame on when it might happen. They also refuse any materials that are laminated in anyway which I do understand even if it puts a kink in my plans.

It is most likely to do with safety with material off-gassing and fumes.  Unknown materials could give off toxic gasses and even with leather you might not know what its been treated with / coated with etc.

I was mainly curious which libraries had what, I was tempted to visit Rhodes and City of Sydney bird's nest ones but .... alas I've never worked up the motivation to go :)
