The local op-shop has the following modem, a Telstra ¿VDSL? unit with a SIM, and phone sockets.  I'm wondering if it would be possible to use it with a VOIP service to get a home number with a POTS or VOIP phone, using only a data SIM for the connection.

In principle yes. A quick read says voip functions are Telstra locked but can be unlocked. You would have to work that piece of magic yourself.

As an ex Telstra person, the likely hood of being able to just plug your own deets into one of these and get it going is pretty low.

You'd be much better buying a cheap TP-Link or something that will do the same thing.

Thanks, you've probably save me $5.

If anyone else needs one, it is at the Bargain Centre in a very soggy Oberon.
