Hi guys,

I have an application where I need to monitor the temperature of some mechanical parts made out of stainless steel 304. I need to monitor it across the whole body of the part, so I wanted to use our thermal camera. The problem is that (new, polished) stainless steel's emissivity is very low, ~0.07, which will throw off all readings.

I know I can change the camera's assumed emissivity, but that will change it for the entire scene, and there are other parts that will have controlled emissivity, that I also want to monitor.

So, my question is, does anyone know of an easy way to apply some sort of paint it other covering to  have a "good" emissivity? I have some "black body tape" that I will be applying to certain parts, but the shape is complex and the tape isn't ideal. Preferably, I'll be able to peel that paint away when I'm done.

I may try black matte paint, or maybe latex paint.

Cheers,
Dmo

I keep a bag of sticky labels (similar to this type: http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/avery-self-adhesive-rectangle-labels-white-49x24mm-325-pack-av937221?cm_mmc=google-_-pla-_-Avery-_-AV937221&cm_mmca1=NULL&cm_mmca3=conversion&cm_mmca9=columbus&CAWELAID=620015440000146778&CAGPSPN=pla&catargetid=620015440000753809&cadevice=c&gclid=CNDn2erExMMCFQEDvAodgyIAWg)
in the bag with the thermal camera.

They're thin enough that it doesn't appear to change the heat flow significantly, and it's easy to remove later.

As for something more paint like for complex parts, I'm not sure sorry. But I'll be curious to see any results you get with different paints. Maybe liquid paper as a first try?

Cheers,
Gavin

What temperature range will the parts experience?

It's all quite close to room temperature, and certainly not more than 35C.

Hey all, I actually found some black body spray paint, with an emissivity of 0.94, which suits me just fine:

Yes, I know, the link is in Japanese, and yes, Google translate is my best friend!

I'll do some tests to see how it goes...

I'm wondering if anybody else read your email and thought -- just for a fleeting moment -- that you'd bought some body paint?  I admit I had to read that part twice :)

I know, that's one reason I love black body paint our black body tape - for the double takes and raised eyebrows....
