I've just bought a new (to me) car. It is missing most of the plastic trims on the front of the seat rails. I have one. Could it be scanned and printed mirror reverse to make the matching part?

Peter.

How big is the trim? There are pragmatic limits to how big you can print stuff. Lineal dimension above about 200mm need to be joined, and if you care about the cosmetic appearance of seams then making seams disappear is quite a lot of work and involves filling and sanding and painting. Not undoable, just annoying and time consuming.

I've had limited success scanning and printing- you end up with topology that is not perfect and very hard to manipulate. Unless its a very complex shape (like sculpture) I've had a LOT of success just CADing the part. Amazing what you can do with digital callipers and some CAD software.

Perhaps post a photo of the trim? If the shape is not too complicated, I'm happy to help CAD it for you if you don't have a lot of experience with CAD software.

This is a pretty good description & generous offer on the right approach -i think scanning is a good way to get the shape with some limits on the precision - its better to use that to -re-model the shape (&mirroring is easy) - where you may need to plan for a multi-part print.

Lofting over & amoother ‘ribs’ (like in a wing as formers) of the shape at some points might also be a good way to approximate re-modelling the shape

Thanks heaps for the offer, Jenna. I'm not very caddy. I've had no replies from wreckers I asked about the trim. I'm guessing they can't be bothered, so this is the best shot I have.

The trim is about the size of the palm of my hand. An odd shaped dish with a couple of fingers inside. I'll get a couple of photos to post tomorrow.

No worries, happy to help. I quite enjoy CADing things and printing them!

Be warned that while I can often get things right first try it sometimes takes a couple of iterations.

Thanks for the warning, Jenna. I also tend towards the iterative solution. ;-)
I have three photos of the trim with a tape beside it so you can get an idea of the size, however I can't attach them to the post. Hopefully the link here will work <Photos>
There is one tricky bit that we will have to work around. The tongue that you can see on the left in the second photo is actually a rectangular hollow. I will take your advice on what is possible. If it fails, we learn.
Let me know if you would like to try it or if you need more detail. We'll also have to work out the when where and how much, offline.

Peter.

Depending on the make or model, eBay or similar systems in the country of origin of the car or brand may be helpful.

I certainly got things like pollen filters for my Vectra (car made here, but full of "Achtung!" stickers) from the UK, where they were a popular Vauxhall product.

Julian.

Thanks Julian.

I've searched both eBay and Gumtree and have only found generic "we've
got parts for your vehicle" sellers. I'll keeplooking, of course, but
this is a good second best.
