Dear Robots and Dinasaurs,

I am emailing you as Dorkbot Sydney Overlord and a Co-Director of Serial Space (an artist run initiative in Chippendale). In 2012 Serial Space is introducing a brand new platform for the development and presentation of interdisciplinary and experimental art practices: Time Machine. Time Machine will be a festival of experimental, time-based art taking place at alternative spaces across Sydney during 16-29 July.

Unfortunately the email that I sent to your group did not get through and the callout deadline has already passed!!!
But I am still very interested in having Robo Dino involved in the festival!!! I believe it would be a great opportunity for many of you to gain exposure from the wider public and engage in a very productive and interdisciplinary environment and also a way of providing funding for your research and development. So I am contacting you all now, in the hopes that some of you might be interested in getting involved. Here are some details on the callout - I have hightlighted the 'labs' stream, which I think would be most relevant to you all, which is the stream I am curating.

In the lead-up to this festival, Serial Space will offer a number of commissions and development residencies for the creation of new work to be presented in the festival. We are also taking applications for programming ideas.

- Development residencies will be facilitated from March to July in the lead up to the festival in a number of locations around Sydney (residencies do not include accommodation)

- Funding will be available for artist fees

- Limited funding is available for small commissions that will be offered to outstanding projects and will be negotiated in relation to specific project needs

These works may fit within one of the four streams of Time Machine, or they may stand alone. Serial Space is seeking bold, ambitious, experimental and exciting ideas to support and present as part of Time Machine.

The program will include 4 major streams*:

SOUND & VISION – a series of events and exhibitions presenting new experimental music, sound art, audiovisual performance, video art, installation and interactive work.

PERFORMANCE – a platform for durational and experimental performance art. As part of the performance stream, Serial Space will curate a performance relay showcasing back-to-back, site-specific performance works.

LAB – a space for ongoing experimentation, where art, technology and science come together. Including workshops, presentations, prototyping, knitting circles, tests, and demonstrations. (more info on this stream below)

TALK – a program of debates, performance lectures, critical forums and artist presentations. We welcome formal experimentation of the presentation and dissemination of information.

If you are interested in applying please email me by Friday 2nd March

:

The format is pretty open at present. Basically - the lab (serial space itself) will be open every day of the festival. The point is that it will be a place for 'ongoing experiments'. There will be presentations and talks and workshops that will be held during these 10 days in the evenings and on the weekends also.

Space will be devided into
1. Project Space: filled with work areas for specific projects. These projects will be commissioned. We are encouraging projects that are participatory and interactively driven for ongoing research and development - these may be facilitated with residencies that will lead up to the festival and then simply moved into the space. I am hoping that the R&D community might be interested in participating in many of these forms. For example - perhaps there is a robot-building project that people might like to develop during the festival as a commissioned project and in conjunction to this the group might like to hold some workshops or talks, knitting circles, or whatever. 3D printing and Robots are the immediate things I thought of that I know you guys are up to - but perhaps there are some other projects that are applicable... People involved in this space will be incouraged to be there on an ongoing basis throughout the 10 days of the festival whenever they are available. We may schedule presentation times for concentrated informative visits to those projects.

2. Programming Space: You might have been to a Dorkbot before... similar to this setup (although a little more intimate) this space will be for programming - workshops, presentations, knitting circles etc. (BTW : We have funding to financially support all programming ideas!).

AOBABTU!!!! Really looking forward to the possibility of working with you!!!

Pia

Hi Pia,

This sounds pretty interesting, but I suspect the majority of the people on the list are either full time students, full time employees, or business owners like myself.   So it is somewhat unlikely many of us would be able to commit to 2 weeks on something like this (unless we had paid leave accrued with nothing else in the pipeline -- I wish!).

Good luck with the project, and please continue to update us on the exciting things going on with Dorkbot/Serial Space.

Cheers,

Kean
