SINJAR — After overrunning the predominantly Yazidi town of Sinjar in August 2014 and taking control of the area for almost 15 months, the Islamic State (IS) insurgents killed over 1,500 civilians and captured nearly 5,000 others.
Mayor of Sinjar, Mahma Khalil, told BasNews that after the liberation of Sinjar in early November 2015, they have discovered 20 Yazidi mass graves inside and around the city where almost 1,600 bodies are buried. He revealed that the victims mostly include women, elderlies and children.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of Martyrs and Anfal Affairs of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), Fuad Othman told BasNews that they have started the legal and technical procedures to recover bodies from the mass graves.
“The Peshmerga forces, initially, have been requested to clear the sites from improvised explosive devices (IED) planted by IS while escaping the area,” Othman said.
He also revealed that they will soon start working on eight mass graves, but recovering the rest is not possible at the moment due to the on-going clashes near the locations.
