What we would need is pretty simple I think. We would need someone who would
be able to manipulate an install of Sybase in conjunction with the CA DB
Agent, mainly to check that the agent is returning the correct metrics and
there is nothing screwy going on. The Sybase is sitting on Solaris 5.6 (2.6)
and the CA Agent has the following functionality:
CPU and I/O Utilization: The Sybase SQL Server Agent monitors the amount of
CPU time that has been spent doing Sybase SQL Server work, the amount of
time the server has spent performing I/O tasks, as well as the amount of
time that the server has been idle
Number of Input/Output Packets: The number of input packets read by Sybase
SQL Server and the number of output packets written by the server are
reported, along with the number of packet errors that have been generated
since the Sybase SQL Server was last started. These fields are for
information only.
Disk Activity: The disk activity generated by Sybase SQL Server is monitored
in terms of the number of I/O reads and writes since the server was last
started, as well as the number of I/O errors that have been detected
Database Monitoring: Monitoring of the status of databases present within a
Sybase SQL Server installation
FileSystem Monitoring: Monitoring of all file systems where the Sybase SQL
Server installation components reside
Transaction Log Monitoring: Monitoring of sizes and the rate of increase in
the amount of space in use
Server Lock Monitoring: Intent, Page, Table, Blocking, Exclusive, Shared and
Demand lock monitoring
Process Monitoring: Monitoring of the status of the processes that make up
the Sybase SQL Server installation.
Table Monitoring: Monitoring of the space usage of specific tables within a
specific database.
Device Monitoring: monitoring of the utilization of specified database
devices
The consultant would have to be able to manipulate the above within Sybase
and emulate problem scenarios (as in logs filling up, using up locks,
filling tables, etc.)
In addition to this we would want to explore the possibility of using this
agent in conjunction with the UNIX Operating System and process agent to
monitor the Replication process (Processes, Disk Queues, etc. , etc) This
would not be crucial but nice to explore.
