I downloaded a copy of ASE Demo Server from the Sybase website. I
installed it on an NT4.0 server, and the installation, went smoothly
except for messages about the file CTL3D32.DLL being the wrong
version. I ignored this message and the install seemed to complete
successfully. However, when I try to start the ADE it fails.

If I use the Sybase Central program to start the server, I get a message
"The service SYBSQL_<my system name> could not be started, Please check
its configuration.".

If I try to start the service through Services manager, I get the error
message
"Could not start the Sybase SQLServer_<my system name> servic on
\\<my system name>.
Error 2140: An internal Windows NT error occurred."

Are these errors related to the DLL problem? Can you suggest a way to
fix these problems?

Note: the BCKServer and HISServer services can be started without error,
but the MONServer and SWLServer services do not start, and produce
errors. The XPServer service causes a Dr. Watson NT error when I try to
start it. This behavior is repeatable and consistant.

Note: The error log showed the following error message each time I
attempt to start the server:
00:00000:00000:1999/06/15 13:46:24.53 kernel basis_dlock: file
'c:\Sybase\DATA\MASTER.DAT' already
in use by a SQL Server
00:00000:00000:1999/06/15 13:46:24.53 kernel kdconfig: unable to
read primary master device
00:00000:00000:1999/06/15 13:46:24.54 kernel kiconfig: read of
config block failed

This looks like (sybase thinks) the master device is already open. Did
this occur right after installation? Have you tried rebooting the NT
server?

Someone in my office recognized the CTL3D32 problem as a VB related
problem. I ran a program called vbrun60.exe which I picked up from the
microsoft ftp site: ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/softlib. This installs VB6.0
Run-Time Files. The file CTL3D32.DLL was not effected, but the error went
away, and I was able to start the Database.
