I am experiencing extremely slow response times in Sybase Central - on
the order of several minutes when I click the "Table" folder before it
will expand to show the table list, and sometimes a minute to display
table layouts when I click on the table name. I have looked at
everything I can think of, and checked for other processes hoggin the
CPU, antivirus, etc. with no obvious cuplrits. Can anyone suggest
something I have missed? (Note: the machine I am using was inherited
from someone else, but I have not found anything that would cause this
type of problem).

Watch Task Manager while the geological-time-scale events are
occurring. See if scview is consuming the CPU or dbeng9.

It may be that scview is not getting enough memory... it's a Java app
and while I wouldn't call if *fat*, let's just say it hasn't seen a
byte it didn't want to eat :)

Your experience is *not* the expected. Tell us more about the
versions, OS, RAM etc.

Windows XP, SP2
1GB RAM
45GB Free space on HD
Sybase ASA 9 database, 749MB is size

Watching process memory usage, scjview is using between 0 and 5% of CPU
time, dbeng9 not even that. Memory usage for scjview is working
between 29 and 35 MB. Totla memory committed is around 700MB. I DO
see scjview making IO Writes during the process of expanding the table
folder, but no corresponding writes in the dbeng9 process. Could I be
hitting the windows page file more that I should?

Windows firewall? Antivirus scanning the .db file?

It should not be the firewall, I am not making any network accesses -
the test database is on my machine. Watching the antivirus process in
Taskmanager, it IS making some IO activity, but nothing compared to
scjview or dbeng9. I tried using different databasees, all woth the
same result.

You're hitting *something*, that's for sure :)... what does Task
Manager say about memory usage? Is RAM full of stuff? Has all the RAM
been allocated to, say, the dbeng9 cache?

Check the Task Manager settings to make sure you are seeing all the
processes, plus all the columns of interest.

Is the hard drive light on solid?

One more word: spyware

task manager shows Commit charge of 360MB / 2461MB
All processes listed (50) I can identify as being valid and known.
dbeng9 shows 20MB usage, VM size of 267MB
scjview shows 30MB usage, VM size is 35MB
hard drive is not being hit hard, that I can tell - although I see IO
write activity from scjview when a table is selected for detail view.

I doubt it is spyware - this is a US Airforce machine, and it is
constatly scanned and verified every night.

I am stumped - I think I will request a new, improved machine...

One thing I would try is to exclude the .db files from the antivirus
realtime scanning. That and the memory suggestions that others have
mentioned may make a big difference.

Have you tried waving a dead chicken over the keyboard? <g>

Trying a different machine is probably is probably the most
cost-effective approach.

Thomas,
I'm one of the System Consultants with the Federal Solutions group in
Bethesda. Our group manages all the DoD accounts - so I'm picking up the
ball on this one...

If you want to give me a call tomorrow, I might be able to assist with the
problems you're seeing.

"On File Access" virus checking can be problematic. How fast does the
help file open?

Do you have ODBC tracing turned on in the ODBC Adminstrator? This will slow
Sybase Cental to a crawl, which is exactly what you are seeing.
