I have two client-server applications written in PB 8 with PFC, and I still
update them. I have made a few changes to the pfe*.pbl files.
I never considered upgrading, even with Vista and Windows 7, because of the
cost of PB upgrade.
But now, I realized that PFC went open source. This means that a reasonably
priced standard PB license for version 11 or 12 would do the trick.
How could I do that?

1) Should I go to version 11, or start from the beta 12?
2) Would it be feasible to first upgrade the PFC to the latest open source
version, and then migrate to PB1x? i.e. will the latest open source PFC work
well with PB8?
3) If not, can you recommend another way?

The open source version is available for 10, 10.5 and 11 from here:

http://pfc.codeplex.com/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx

If I understand the timeline correctly it will be another 6-8 months before
12 goes GA. You could get the latest version - 11.5 now and then download
PFC for 11 and migrate it to 11.5.

Direct from Sybase the Desktop edition is $295, Professional is $1,295 and
Enterprise is $2,995. The Upgrade version only is valid when upgrading from
11.

This website has some low prices:

1. My understanding is that beta isn't licensed to release to
production. Getting 12 thoroughly tested to make sure it turns out as
a better product is a good idea, but even if you're not planning to
release for a year once it's legal, I still wouldn't do production
work in beta. (Beta, in general with most companies, you have to
consider throw-away work.)

2. The easy answer is no, PBLs aren't backward compatible. It's not
impossible, with a lot of manual work, to do a backwards migration of
the code, but you'd lose a lot of the functionality you'll want in the
end. (e.g. handling of new control types, enumerateds, etc...)

3. Migrate up first and test your app. (Off hand, I believe the only
thing that will fail is of_FindWindow().) Then, upgrade your PFC
(replacing *only* the PFC*.PBLs, of course).

Good luck,
