We recently migrated to powerbuilder 11.5 from 10.5. We have several
projects going with outside contractors who need to log into machines
inside our environment via terminal server. We have four machines set
up for them to use with powerbuilder installed. We have purchased four
licenses to go with these four machines.

We initially set up these machines with local licenses but later
learned that local licensing does not work with terminal server, so I
installed a SySAM license server. I logged into one of the computers
via terminal server and was able to update the license to a served
license successfully. When one of our contractors logged into that
same computer the served license was not available to them (it still
showed up as an evaluation license). I had them go through the
procedure to update to the served license and it was successful.

The problem I have now is that when I go to the license server and
perform a server status inquiry it shows two licenses assigned to that
machine. One for me and one for the contractor.

I understand that floating licenses are not available through SySAM.
We thought that having the four licenses to cover the four computers
would be sufficient, but it does not appear that the license is being
applied to the computer with powerbuilder installed, but rather to the
user that logs into that computer. Why is this? It seems that if the
copy of powerbuilder is licensed on a computer, it shouldn't matter
who logs into the machine to use it as long as there is only one user
at a time...

How can I "check in" the license that the server assigned to me so
that it can be used by another contractor? (I have my own local
license installed on my computer).

Finally, Is there any hope that SySAM will be changed to handle
floating licenses any time soon?

Two issues:

1. PowerBuilder licensing is not supported under Terminal Server at
all. The only remote access that is allowed is Remote Desktop.

2. In order to have remote access under Remote Desktop, you have to
have the server installed on the same machine as PowerBuilder. That
is, the license has to be served up locally.

SySAM is capable of handling floating licenses. The issue is a
decision that Sybase made to not support a floating license model for
PowerBuilder.

PB does not support a floating license model. In a "served" scenario, it
uses the user's name to assign the license. Since you both have signed on,
you've consumed two of the four licenses. What you can do is release yours
using the SySam commandline utility, and free up the associated license
bound to your name.

Thanks for the responses.

I used the wrong terminology. Our contractors are using Remote
Desktop, not Terminal Server to connect to the computers we have set
up for them.

Does this mean I should install the SySAM license server on each
computer with a single license? Will it still operate so that only one
user can use that license?

No, each machine should have license setup locally using its physical
address. Remote desktop may then be used after successful local
installation, except when license grace expires, you must login locally, run
PB, then go back to remote desktop use......

Yes. If you have SySam license server running locally serving up the
license it will work properly even when the user is connected through
Remote Desktop.
