Charlie, a wise-cracking, homeless, American orphan is magically transported to the ancient Chinese kingdom of Sanxingdui, where a colorful team of superheroes need his help to defend the city from a brutal conqueror.
What It Is: In the ancient Chinese kingdom of Sanxingdui, a devious interdimensional warlord (Ron Perlman) wreaks havoc on a regular basis in an attempt to steal a mystical item called the Jade Blade. Five superheroes with golden masks that gift them abilities are the only thing standing in his way. Unfortunately, one of the heroes perishes and thus his mask needs a new worthy successor. Enter Charlie, a modern-day American homeless thief whom the mask chooses. In this animated feature, can Charlie defeat evil alongside his new friends, or is he doomed to fall back into his less-than-honorable ways?
This innovative mask works in two stages to deliver immediate results. First, it clears the skin by drawing out all impurities, dirt, and oiliness. Then, once the skin is cleared and it can better absorb the essential elements, the nourishing stage is performed. During this stage, by massaging the golden mask, the nourishing ingredients are absorbed by the skin, enhancing a radiant, youthful, and glowing complexion. It works like magic!
With the spatula, apply onto dry skin creating a uniform layer all over facial skin, carefully avoiding the eye area. Wait for 20 seconds. Cover the black rock with tissue paper; glide it lightly over the facial skin to completely remove the mask (half a centimeter away from the skin). Make sure the entire mask residues have been removed, leaving only a golden veil over your skin. Massage your skin for 2-3 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Use once a week.
Currently available to stream on digital platforms, Heroes of the Golden Mask is a new animated film from Gravitas Ventures. The adventure movie is inspired by the bronze masks of Sanxingdui, which were discovered in the Sichuan Province in the late 1980s. In addition to paying homage to China's ancient kingdom, it is also the final feature of the late Christopher Plummer (Knives Out, The Sound of Music).
Moving past the graphics, the main characters are an interesting mix of cultures and powers. The masks they wear allow them to have unique abilities. Li can fire energy arrows from her bow, Aesop is a fish-like being that can swing a mighty hammer (not to be confused with Mjolnir), Zuma is a Mayan warrior who flings around colorful balls, and Zhu can shape-shift into the 12 animal totems of the Chinese Zodiac. Unfortunately not the dragon, but there is always room to learn and grow. Charlie meanwhile has to learn to master telekinesis. The villain Kunyi is equally impressive with his fighting skills and ability to conjure monsters. Watching these characters go head to head provides a lot of fun visuals for younger audience members. Although to be clear, certain elements may be a little bit too scary for young ones especially the swarm of zombie-like ghosts and a huge monster with a hole for a face.
The Predator mask is one of the most famous science fiction masks of all time, becoming an instant classic from the moment Predator was introduced onto the big screen in 1987. Since then, the franchise has gone on to create multiple movies, novels, video games, and comics; with the iconic mask remaining constant throughout.
Sean Patrick O'Reilly is passionate about all the projects he's involved with, whether as a producer, writer, or directing. While he's involved with several live-action projects, the bulk of his commitment to directing is in animation. Some of his best known include the Howard Lovecraft franchise films, Pixies (2015), Go Fish (2019), and Panda vs. Aliens (2021). His latest is Heroes of the Golden Masks, which centers on Charlie (Kiefer O'Reilly), a wise-cracking, homeless American orphan who is magically transported to the ancient Chinese kingdom of Sanxingdui, where a colorful team of superheroes needs his help to defend the city from a brutal conqueror. Charlie joins the heroes and secretly schemes to steal the priceless golden masks that grant them their powers. O'Reilly spoke with Bleeding Cool about the inspiration behind the film, working with screen legend and star Christopher Plummer in his final film, casting, and the difference between working in animation and live-action projects.
Since the film delves into Asian culture, what do you find fascinating about the subject matter and mythos?
Sanxingdui is one of the lost cities, kind of like Machu Picchu, Jamaica, and Atlantis. When Sanxingdui was founded in the eighties, people were flabbergasted. From my perspective, learning about the history and all these cultures was cool. Naturally, I was already a mask collector, like I probably have a dozen masks in the office and another on my desk at home. Taking these real-life masks and then bringing some creative imagination, I'm like, "Maybe these masks back in the day had superpowers, and many superheroes wear masks. Dealing with that was honestly so much fun.
Up until Season 5, An Yu did not like the world outside Mystery Mountain, and was reluctant to travel there, mainly because her powers didn't work when she's away from Mystery Mountain. Due to her long imprisonment in the dragon gong, and her rarely ever leaving Mystery Mountain, she is unfamiliar with the modern world or modern day customs. In the short "PJ Masks Surprise" for example, the PJ Masks had to explain to her what a party is. This began to change in "The Power of Mystery Mountain," when she found a way to retain her powers even when in the city. As of Season 6, after becoming a member of the Power Heroes, she has less issues with leaving Mystery Mountain and thus more frequently joins the other heroes in the city.
Behold! The ancient Chinese kingdom of Sanxingdui, where a colorful team of superheroes needs the help of one orphan against a conqueror who knows no bounds. But is this American orphan to be trusted?
The heart by screenwriters Xiaoming Yao, John Wilson, Dennis Edwards is in the right places as they adapt the source material from Scotsman John Wilson, but there is a vacuum when it comes to getting the audience involved as Charlie, an American orphan, gets magically whisked away to the ancient kingdom of Sanxingdui and is introduced to the superheroes - featuring a two-bodied snake, a hellish-looking yak, a zombified crocodile and a flying tiger, and their golden masks which gives them their powers.
But CG Bros Entertainment, Arcana Studios, and Golden Image Cultural Communication Inc have an interesting film on their hands; hopefully, it finds an audience because the worldbuilding here is impressive and, if I am being honest, unique thanks to the selfish nature Charlie must overcome and those interesting magical masks.
Chrysaor quickly tries to retake control of the situation, but his Dolphin Warriors become terrified as Frank Zhang comes out from his hiding spot and shapeshifts into a dolphin, which Percy claims is a punishment from the god for having their quest delayed. Chrysaor's crew flee from the ship and Percy and the other demigods surround him. Chrysaor swears his revenge on Percy but is knocked off the ship by Frank Zhang in the form of an eight-hundred-pound grizzly bear. While Frank managed to knock off his golden mask, they don't see his face and Chrysaor dives into the sea. Percy decides not to follow him since he does not know the waters and Chrysaor would be too powerful to battle alone. Afterward, Percy sinks Chrysaor's ship and treasure as a tribute to Bacchus, but not before filling it with Diet Coke.
Chrysaor wears a golden Gorgon mask on his face, with curved tusks, horrible features, and curly golden snake hair. He is dressed in full Greek combat armor with a Greek sword made out of Imperial Gold, the first to wield the weapon, which he stubbornly calls Enchanted Gold. His facial features are unknown, but it can be assumed there is something he wants to hide. When his mask is ripped from his head, he immediately covers his face. His voice is described as "rich and velvety", with an exotic Middle Eastern accent, much like that which his mother Medusa had in The Lightning Thief.
When Ekimu, the Mask Maker used the Mask of Time to look into the future of Okoto, he saw an impending threat that would require the use of six incredibly powerful masks, and crafted the Golden Masks of Power. To accomplish this task, he had the Protectors of that time gather Elemental Crystals from the Elemental Creatures.
The threat Ekimu foresaw came to pass as Makuta's Betrayal, and the resulting fight between Ekimu and Makuta caused a shockwave to scatter the Golden Masks across the island. The Protectors eventually recovered these masks, and hid one in a shrine in every region.
In the City of the Mask Makers, the Toa were attacked by Skull Warriors, but the Toa managed to defeat them. Lewa's Golden Mask was stolen from him by Skull Slicer, but the Toa defeated him and recovered Lewa's mask. Pohatu's Golden Mask was stolen by Skull Scorpios, and Onua's Golden Mask by Skull Basher, but both masks were recovered by the Toa. In the Great Forge, Kulta destroyed all six Golden Masks of Power with his Mask Stealer Staff. After defeating Kulta, Ekimu repaired the Golden Masks for the Toa.
The Golden Masks of Power are stronger versions of the elemental masks that the Toa wore when they arrived on Okoto. The masks enhance the Toa's elemental powers. Ekimu can communicate with the masks' wearers through visions, even when he is asleep.
