are there any limits to the size of picture objects.

I have a landscape image of 880,000 bytes which I'm trying
to display in a picture object ( i.e.
p_1.setpicture(lb_blob)) and i'm get the following error
"image too wide for this implementation'.

it's the only image that is doing this.

a Portrait image of 1,100,000 bytes load and displays ok.

TIA

Convert the file to another format jpg or gif or bmp ...
And try again

I forgot to mention it a jpeg
but I'll give it a try.

my other option would be to resize it. ( but I really do not
what to have to do that)

You should use a graphic software: Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, or Paint, ...

MY app is trying to save these images to a database.
(i'm using MS-Access as the database but plan to switch to
MS-sql for production)

I have photoshop.
I've been trying to resize the image.
if I resize from 4800 to 4000 pixels I don't get the error
but I can't save it to the database.

I also try saving it as a tiff , but got the same error.

It's Access issue I think. You should not put heavy picture in your
database. Just save an index and store the pictures in a particular folder
pointed by the index.
But try to open a new blank sheet on Photoshop with the same size as your
picture, save this blank sheet as jpg (try different ppties of jpg - low,
medium,...)
And copy/Paste your picture in this blank sheet, save it again, and try
again
don't forget to cross fingers ;-)
