Where can I go to understand what licenses I need?

Hi there

I have a current PB11.5 / Oracle Database application and I want to develop
a 'mobile' version.

I have a PocketBuilder license with support (have had it for years in
anticipation of using it!!)

Anyway, I am totally confused about what I need and what licenses I need for
development and deployment.

The 'Pocket' version of the app will be a very cut down version. I may need
stored procs and triggers capability but could conceivable just do that in
the PocketBuilder app. The idea will be that I export some 'reference' data
to the mobile device. The mobile user will then create some data records
then I would want to load these into the main Oracle database - not
necessarily synching into main data, I would probably just load the 'mobile'
data to a few intermediate Oracle tables then have a server side job process
the mobile data and bring it into the main database.

So, what do I need?

UltraLite -> MobiLink -> Oracle RDBMS

SQLAnywhere -> MobiLink -> Oracle RDBMS

or is there some other option?

Also, if I go for one of the above 2 options, what do I need to license both
for development and deployment for each option?

I am not expecting spoon feeding of the answers, but if someone can point me
in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Brian

A development license of PocketBuilder (which, I think you already have).

One production license of SQLAnywhere Server (the base version) which gets
you MobiLink.

One license of EITHER SQL Anywhere Personal Server with Sync (WinCE) OR
UltraLite for each deployed device. This depends on whether UltraLite will
satisfy your on-device data storage/processing requirements.

That's the minimum. I might also recommend Test/QA server licenses of SA
for testing purposes...

Thanks for that Paul

So just to clarify....

For each customer will I need to purchase a SQLAnywhere Base licence in
their name then the appropriate number of SA deployment or Ultralite
licences for each PDA?

What about if I was to not use MobiLink but to write a utility to export
some data to XML - do I always need to purchase a Base SA server licence
before I can purchase the PDA licences (I am guessing so!)

Also, for this Base licence? Since I am not actually using the SQLAnywhere
server database, do I just purchase the cheapest option just to get
MobiLink - and even if I don't use MobiLink to allow me to buy the PDA
deployment components?

When I look at the Sybase eshop (UK one) I can see:

SQLAnywhere Workgroup 5 user 11.0.1 for Windows (412.80 GBP)

Is this the cheapest option fo rme?

Thanks again
Brian

That's correct. One server license per "installation", plus one client SA
(personal server with sync) or UL license per remote device.

Absolutely not. The only reason you're purchasing the Base SA server
license is to get MobiLink. If you're not using ML, and you'll be rolling
your own synchronization logic (a task that should not be underestimated,
btw) then you only need the client licenses. Those then become SA Personal
Server (without ML sync) or UltraLite.

Yes. We don't sell MobiLink as a separate offering. You can only get it in
the box with SQLAnywhere Server, so that's the starting point. If you don't
need the server, that component sits on the shelf...

That's a discussion to have with your local Sales rep... I'm reading
between the lines that you plan on reselling this solution to your
customers? Is that correct? Because we have a strong OEM Partner agreement
that provides fairly decent discounts off the base list prices.
