We have tried configure CIS, but have yet to get it to work.
One of the local sales reps says we need DirectConnect (along with a Unix-based
ODBC driver, which costs about $18K, yikes!).
Another Sybase person says that DirectConnect will only allow us to read data
from MS SQL Server....if we want to write data, we need OmniConnect.
SIGH.....
Needless to say, we are very frustrated with Sybase at this point.
Is there anyone out there who has done this? Which components do you use?
I would appreciate any help regarding this.
Cheers,
Scott

A lot cheaper than 18k! I'll write you one for less...

- Sybase client and server products (e.g. ASE, SQL Server, etc.) can
communicate natively with MS SQL Server 6.5 and previous (i.e. no
DirectConnect is needed).
- Sybase client and server products cannot communicate natively with MSSS
7.0 and up (i.e. DirectConnect is required).
- A DirectConnect is required anytime a Sybase product needs to communicate
with a non-Sybase target (i.e. MSSS 7.0 and up, Oracle, DB2, etc.).
- CIS (included in ASE 11.5 & up and OmniConnect) only knows how to
communicate natively/directly with other Sybase server products.
- If you need to configure CIS to communicate with a non-Sybase target (e.g.
MSSS 7.0), you need a DirectConnect for MSSS between CIS and MSSS.
The one big problem with this scenario right now is that Sybase does not yet
have a DirectConnect for MSSS 7.0. They're currently shipping a DC for MSSS
but it only works with MSSS 6.5 and previous.
I'll try to address your points below:
- "We have tried configure CIS, but have yet to get it to work." CIS only
knows how to communicate with other Sybase server products and MSSS 6.5
previous, not with MSSS 7.0.
- "One of the local sales reps says we need DirectConnect (along with a
Unix-based ODBC driver, which costs about $18K, yikes!)." Yes, you will
need a DirectConnect for MSSS to get CIS to communicate with MSSS 7.0, BUT
Sybase is not yet shipping a DC for MSSS that works with v7.0.
- "Another Sybase person says that DirectConnect will only allow us to read
data from MS SQL Server....if we want to write data, we need OmniConnect."
You should be able to read and write data through any DirectConnect.
Additional points:
- CIS is the same technology and is included in both ASE and OmniConnect.
So, whether you're using ASE or OmniConnect to communicate with other back
ends, it's all the same. You won't get anything in OmniConnect that you
can't get in ASE (you just can't store local data in OmniConnect like you
can in ASE).
- For ASE 11.5.x: If you want to use CIS to talk to non-Sybase targets
through DirectConnect, including MSSS 7.0, you need to purchase an
additional "product" called the ASE Extended Enterprise Option (EEO) to
enable heterogeneous data access. EEO is not required if you're using
OmniConnect 11.5.x, though.
- For ASE 11.9.x & up: Heterogeneous data access using CIS is included with
ASE, and EEO no longer exists.
Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi , Are you 100 % sure of this ? We have never been able to
communicate natively with MS 6.5 from ASE 11.9.x severs - it always
results in a "TDS error" - perhaps we are doing something wrong - what
do you define your remote server class for MS servers as ? The last
product I'm aware of which can do this is Omin 10.5 - and this
capabilty was ( in my understanding) unsupported anyway..

It's easy to get confused on this. We've successfully connected Adaptive
Server ANYWHERE 6.0 to MS SQL 7.0, not Adaptive Server ENTERPRISE. For ASE
11.9.2, we have had some success using the 3.6 ODBC Driver (available in MDAC
2.0), instead of the latest driver. ASA worked fine with the latest MS SQL
driver.
