hi guys

We are obliged to provide a data feed to a Sybase System 11 database
belonging to another organisation. As part of the agreement, they purchased
the necessary ODBC drivers and supplied them to us.

At present, the feed is provided by means of a Visual Basic application that
runs on a seldom a used workstation. From our point of view this is a far
from ideal situation. The application currently uses RDO and the connection
to a Sybase System 11 frequently drops. As we have to make some major
enhancements to the application, we would like either to convert to the data
access to ADO which will give us a better connection management or better
yet, to install native OLEDB drivers on the server where our source data is
stored, link the Sybase System 11 database to our SQL Server 7 database and
run the update as an SQL job on the SQL Server.

The drivers that we have been supplied with caused major problems when they
were installed on the existing Workstation. From what I have heard, they
caused ODBC to stop working for other data sources necessitating a
re-install of mdac_typ.exe; generally not the kind of thing you want to try
to get permission to install on a mission critical production server!

Additionally, when we tried to use the ODBC driver with ADO, we got a the
catastrophic failure error message which is listed in at the MSDN as a bug
in at the an Merant ODBC Driver. As we yet did not allow ourselves purchase
the drivers, we do not have a support agreement with Merant and we are
unable therefore to obtain updates or other drivers from their website.

To make matters worse, we have no Sybase System 11 knowledge on our site, we
don't use it.

Can anybody suggest where we might obtain native OLE DB drivers or else ODBC
drivers that are bug free for Sybase System 11 preferably driver's that do
not require a massive install on a client machine so that we can install
them on our production Server without making ourselves too unpopular.

Cheers

Paul BJ
