Greetings...

I have an interesting problem. I built a new ASE 15.0.1 server on AIX 5.3
TL04. The server built with no issues, I'm now trying to create my devices.
Anytime I try to create a device greater than 2047 MB it fails with this
error:

00:00000:00016:2007/11/12 10:35:09.69 kernel basis_dsizecheck: attempt to
seek to page 5504513 on device '/dev/rtest_sybase' failed, system error is:
Invalid argument

I cannot figure out why Sybase is hitting this limitation. My ulimit values
are correct, I have async i/o enabled at both the OS and ASE level, the
logical volume permissions are correct. I'm using raw partitions, but I've
tried a file system device as well and it hits the same error at the same
threshold.

What's really interesting is that on the SAME physical host machine, I also
have an ASE 12.5.3 server running, and it has several devices greater than
2047 MB operating as expected. So it does not appear to be an OS problem,
but rather something with the ASE 15 server itself.

Anyone ever encounter this? I am stumped, and so is Sybase Support
currently.

Thanks,
TJ

Have you tried creating a large file with the same user in the same
filesystem?

Obviously raw devices shouldn't have a size problem, but the type of
filesystem used can probably affect the ability to create files larger
than 2GB (although I thought that this was always enabled by default for
AIX 5.x)

There is no filesystem in play at all. I have one large volume group
comprised of 14 physical disks, and then I just create raw partitions using
that space. I do not have any filesystems on this volume group. I have
created files in filesystems on rootvg with the sybase user with no problem,
and I also have a 12.5.3 server running with the same sybase user that has
multiple 10 GB devices.

I figured it out - it was the system kernel - I was running 32-bit with
64-bit extensions, rather than the 64-bit kernel. Once I made that change I
was able to create 10 GB devices with no problem.

i also had the same issue and that was due to file size limitation from OS side, once i reduce the size this was resolved.
