"sp_metrics drop" using lots of locks

When I use sp_metrics to drop roughly 180k metrics rows from a db (on
ASE 15.5), it's running out of locks on our server (300k limit). Is
there anyway to drop metrics without using a huge number of locks?
Nothing else on the ASE server uses this many locks.
