I've been trying to install a test-instance of Sybase ASE 15.02 on an
Ubuntu Feisty system with 192k of memory. I installed libaio, raised
shmmax beyond the 58MB it wanted, and made sure that LD_POINTER_GUARD
was exported with the value "1". However, attempting to initialize
the database still results in a segmentation fault, right after the
"master.dat" file gets created.

Has anyone gotten Sybase ASE 15 developer edition to work on Ubuntu
7.04 32-bit?

Hi David,

Make sure you're using ASE 15.0.2 ESD 4 or higher. It should work fine.

If you still have troubles after that, you can always create a chroot
environment:

Well, your blog-post says to set up a chroot environment for Ubuntu F
and this particular system is running Ubuntu F. However, I did get it
to work just now.

I didn't use the Java installer again (successfully). Instead I hand-
wrote a RUN_servername script and added a cause to the ${SYBASE}/
interfaces file.
I ran the new RUN_ script with the following extra environment
variables:

LANG=C
LD_POINTER_GUARD=0

I also had to set LANG=C in order to run isql; otherwise I got the
following message:

The context allocation routine failed when it tried to load
localization files!!
One or more following problems may caused the failure

Your sybase home directory is /opt/sybase. Check the environment
variable SYBASE
if it is not the one you want!
Using locale name "es_MX.UTF-8" defined in environment variable LANG
Locale name "es_MX.UTF-8" doesn't exist in your /opt/sybase/locales/
locales.dat file
An error occurred when attempting to allocate localization-related
structures.
