of ASE server on single host and can somebody tell me how to
go about doing that. we are using 15.0/sun sol 10. TIA

Just wanted to add that we are running one instance on the
host already, so now I just need to create another one, I
would appreciate if anybody can point me to any documents.
TIA

Simple: Just give every server a different name, and use a different port
number for each one.

You can use srvbuild or srvbuildres binaries ( if you are planning to
use resource file), to create ASE instances If you want to create ASE
instances with different ASE versions, you need to install versions in
different directory. While accessing the particular instance you can
source $SYBASE/SYBASE.csh or the similar file if you are using any
other shell other than csh

I've seen hosts with 12 to 15 ASE instances running on them...

If you are running short on memory and they are all using the same software
library, all of the instances can share one backup server. Change the
SYB_BACKUP entry in sysservers to use the existing (first) backupserver created.

Rob,
Do I have to run seperate installation for each instance?

Yes, you create every instance separately.
This is assuming that you want N different ASE servers. If you want N
different databases, you can create those in a single server (as long as N <
32767).

No, if you want to use the same installed version of
ASE, you just create a new instance via one of the
configuration methods. Each instance will require
a different name and port number as well as separate
physical devices. You could share the same backup
server if you wish. I gather your ASE license is
valid to allow all this.

Seeing Anthony's reply I realised the concept of 'installation' may be
understood differently, and I was a bit sloppy (sorry for that). The proper
way is perhaps that 'installation' means: installing ASE from a product CD
(or downloaded CD) onto the host OS, establishing a $SYBASE where the
installation is located. To create a server, one would have to run the
'configuration' step which actually creates a new ASE server. You can create
multiple servers in one ASE installation, and this is probably what the OP
was after. In other words: you don't 'install' an ASE server, but you
'configure' (or 'create') one.

This is exactly what I was looking for , but not sure where
to start as I have never done it before. I am not clear
exactly what is 'configuration' step means. can you pls be
more specific.

I am assuming that 'dataserver' is the utility I need to use
to create another instance of ASE 15.0 on my same host.
Please correct me if I am not right and again thanks for all
the reply.

No - you use srvbuild or srvbuildres to create a new instance.

I have just completed a multiple Sybase server build on 2 Sun E25K unix
machines. Would be happy to talk thru how this was done. You can contact
