I'm no expert on building, but the wooden dowls should work, the only
problem with them is they tend to break quicker. The foam I found were
at arts and crafts stores. Also I've heard the "hard" pillow foam or
seat cushions work to. I'll try to get more "builders" to respond too.
I hope this helps!

Yo! Alright the foam you're probably referring to is the open cell
foam. The place that I've found best for that stuff is JoAnne Fabrics
but Walmart has a sort of substitute. The wooden dowels will do just
fine for a type of core but know that they do break and crack so if
your weapon starts to wobble badly over time you may need to replace
it. Hell you could use copper too if you want to spend an extra dollar
or two but that will wear away at the PVC a lot so save that for
premier weapons. Every core has a 'lifespan' to it; fiberglass rod
cores have the longest followed by dowels and then copper. It's up to
you how you want to do that you know? I would suggest going to Menards
for materials if you have one in the area. Home Depot works though if
that's what you have.

Pool noodles are a great way to start before moving on to pipe insulation :-)

I'd have to disagree there only because the only person I saw using
pool noodles had weapons that failed all the time. I guess the tape
didn't like to stay on! Although if t works for you then go for it.

Cheddar is right. Pool noodles are too dense for people who regularily
hit too hard. The guy who did use the pool noodles wrapped the tape
around it instead of laying it on and also put a tennis ball on the
end for a stabbing tip. It was rediculous.

My group seam to think the pool noodles hurt a little less i think it
is about the same. is there anyother groups in CA?
or is there a spot here on the site where my group can get added like
a list or somthing? O and what are good ways to get more pepole
involved?

I don't know of any particular foam fighting groups. There is a group
that uses kendo sticks and such from Thousand Oaks. Cheddar went there
once and fought with them and he says they're pretty legitimate. You
could look at our links page to see if there are boffing groups around
your area. As for how to get more people involved, showing people the
website or some of the weapons works pretty well. Word of mouth is
probably your most effective bet though. Here in wisconsin friends of
friends come and such, you know how that goes.

We use some pool noodle weapons and some swordtag-style weapons. Here are some pics from our training sessions:

On the topic of people being heavy-handed with pool noodle weapons... well, we let our beginners use these so that they learn how to hit others without hurting. Also, because pool noodle weapons are cylindric, the wielder doesn't need to pay much attention whether he's using an "edge" or a "flat" side to hit others, which, we think, allows them to train how much power to use when swinging. And it's been working so far :-)

Hey man, if it works it works. If you want to put your videos up you'd
have to talk to Admin or Rix. I personally don't see why not but
address it to him to be sure. What you would have to do is load your
video up on yahoo videos, google videos, or youtube or something and
them e-mail Rix or Admin the link and they would post it on our videos
page. It's pretty simple just talk to him.

Either email me or Admin or post a link to the video here in the
forum. We would be happy to put a permanent link in the videos section
of the site. Move videos the better I think!

Here it's about the same, 80% of the group is between 16-20, with a handful of younger (we even have two mothers who join the battles with their children) and a handful in their late 20s/early 30s.

Nice battles. I have never heard of an hp system before. It looks like
you guys have a nice facility to work with. I wish we had someplace
indoors for winter battles.

Those are some good battles. You should throw up some short sword
battles so i can really see what you guys can do. My old mentor of
sorts told me to start using a short sword because the better you are
with shorter weapons the better you are in general. I kind of took it
to the extreme and now short swords is what i'm known for. My buddy
Caleb that just wrote a comment like three up from here is one of the
best short sword fighters i've ever seen. He'll tell you what's up.
Those swords if you make them right are some intense battles

Short Sword to me is right around 30 inches long. In september I'll
get a new how-to-make short sword video up and it'll say how long it
is overall.
