Hi All,

Our fence hanging party is on for tomorrow. There is still a lot to do.

Because of the snow, we need to see what is feasible and what needs us to wait until some of the snow melts.

Please come with warm clothes and gloves that allow you to work without taking them off.

Bring snowshoes if you have.

And bring your skis. In case we can’t do much, we can at least have a nice ski.

I’ll be at the trail head at 9am with more zip ties.

Thanks,
Sanna

The Forest Service YCC Fire Crew was able to help out today, and will also help all day tomorrow.  If anyone wants to jump in for an hour or two, like over the lunch hour, that would be great.  there is a good chance that the bulk of it will be done by Wednesday afternoon, just in time for another potential snow delivery.

Hey SWNSC Friends,
It was actually real skiing on the trails today as opposed to trying to slide around on a few frozen blades of grass with 2-3" of snow.   I work the evening shift at the pool, but I am available and happy to help with fence hanging this coming Saturday morning and/or Friday morning before 10:30 am.

Fingers crossed that this winter is a repeat of 2000-01 or 1986-87=skiing the xc trails in November and the lifts running at Thanksgiving on Pajarito.  1986-87 season the lifts ran until Mother Day Weekend.  2000-01-the winter after the Cerro Grando Fire, lifts ran until mid April

Hello Sana, I will be ready to assist next weekend as well. I know in the past I’ve stepped up, but have been a little tied up with travel and remodeling projects. One thing to consider is that we need to make sure that the poles are all secure before we hang the fence. I will try reaching out to you by phone this afternoon.

Hi Sanna,

Thanks for stepping up. I will be happy to help next weekend.

We will need somebody who can drive the machines.

Otherwise we just need all of us to show up ready to work. For this job, things that can be helpful are pliers for grabbing the end of the zip ties, gloves, snacks, and a couple of step ladders. What else?

Would folks be around to help with the fence hanging next weekend (Nov 9 and 10)?

I can go and get zip ties. Clay, or someone who can drive the fencing up, would you be available to do that?

We could start on Sat at 9am and if enough folks come, we might almost finish on Sat.

Thanks,
Sanna

Well, it's getting to the point where we have to really put some focus on getting things done. The removal of locust/aspen shoots is about 70% complete. There is still quite a bit on TJs loop (Points CDEFG) and Dave's Dogleg (Points H-I), then the upper trails from J to L.

We brought Kermit down to Logan's for some work on the starter (which I now have, btw Logan) and the transmission. I have a few things to do with machines and the groomers themselves to get done before we're ready.

The big question mark is the fence hanging initiative. Someone usually steps up to manage that project. It's one of the most critical tasks to prepare for the season. Without it, well, there wouldn't be any snow from the trailhead to about Point B. So, we do need a small army of willing volunteers to be ready for the season!

OK, that's all for now.

Thanks, Sanna!  With all the wonderful snow we are getting it is important to keep in mind that the need to finish the snow fencing install this weekend is even more dire and is the highest priority item to complete to get us closer to groomed skiing. I'm so glad so many of us have volunteered as we will absolutely need all the help and resilience to get this done in the current conditions.

In order to have a productive effort on Saturday and Sunday (and Monday for those who have it off! We will likely need that extra day as well!) we need people to be going up today, Friday, to locate and unbury the rolls of fencing and to distribute step stools - without sufficient step stools (we will likely need more volunteers to steady the step stools in these conditions) we will not be able to install integral part of the fencing.
If you are able to hang fencing today please respond to me to get more details on locating the zip ties.
Step stools are in the back of the Kubota - if you have additional step stools to bring up, please do.
***There are over 35 inches of snow up there and there is a small chance of additional snow even on Saturday so you have to not only wear warm and properly water/snow proof clothing but you have to consider slipping potential of your shoes (ski boots on stools?) and bring rubberized thin work gloves to do zip tie work without freezing your hands.

thank you, everyone!

Dina and Sanna,
What time on Monday? I am off Monday and will be happy to help. At 8:00,  I need to drop off my mother in law’s car at NAPA for an oil change. I can be at the trailhead by 9:00 or a little before then.

I'm working on Monday, but if you come up Sat or Sunday that should help you get an idea of what to do on Monday on your own or with others.
thanks!

PEEC is very kindly lending us 10 pairs of snowshoes for fence hanging. But bring your own if you have them. They will be our friends tomorrow and we can maybe get a little of the trail packed for the groomer while we're working!

Bring some spare pairs of gloves to change into.

There is a lot of snow up there! Fun skiing.

Siobhan

Thank you all so much for coming to help with the fence hanging! We had a great crew and got it mostly done.

There are a couple of short sections between point A and B that are lacking fence, and the lower road could get one roll to extend the top layer a bit. We couldn’t finish those as we did not find all the fence rolls under the snow.

Later, we located the additional rolls.

Now, we are planning to go out there tomorrow to finish. I suggest starting at 8:30am to miss the worst of the parking situation.

Feel free to join us if you are up for it. But definitely bring your skis too. I don’t expect the work to take too long, and then you can enjoy skiing afterwards.

Thanks again for everyone who came! If missed the fun this time, you can blame your awesome fellow skiers who completed the job so quickly!

Thanks,
Sanna

For those out helping with fencing tomorrow please do NOT put any additional fencing on the lower road. We forgot to stress that lower road gets fencing along just the metal portion, so that's one layer/roll width mid height rather than 2 full levels of rolls - as a result we ran out of fencing before completing some key areas.
We are ordering more fencing, but for Sunday let's prioritize putting up what fencing is left to hang at point A on the inside and up upper trail on to B as well as the trailhead start spot just past the trailhead sign that gets really sunbaked. We are going to get the older 'racing' looking fencing out of the fencing shed as well to use for that and use the rolls that were left out at C/H for Daves/TJs.
Also, more zipties are reported to be needed to solidify the fencing at the rock.
The additional fencing that's been ordered will need to be put up on TJs near that u-turn/clear area and on Dave's Dogleg once it arrives - we will let folks know when it's up there to be put up.
Amazing work today!! Thank you to everyone who came out and to Sanna for leading! There is a lot of work that happens before we can even hang fencing - big thank you to Clay for getting all the fencing out and distributed and to everyone who has been clearing downed trees, locust and aspen shoots off the trails for the past three months - it takes a lot of days and hours of work and makes a huge difference in how well we can groom out the first few storms especially. And thank you to everyone digging out the fencing over and over again to locate everything for today!
On top of this grooming efforts have started - that's a lot of hard work usually in the dark and cold - hug a groomer and buy them some beer! :)
thanks, everyone! It's wonderful to have so many folks come out and pitch in to make the trail and skiing better for everyone!

Thank you all for your help with the fence hanging. Today we completed the sections between points A and B, added some more fencing at point A, tightened the fence at the rock, and added fencing at the curve at Dave’s dogleg.

Special thanks to Siobhan and Dina for locating buried fence rolls and digging out remaining fencing from the shed, and Siobhan and Peek for extra snowshoes. Those made the work much easier.

Now the only location that still needs fencing is the curve at TJs. We will hopefully get to that soon.

Special thanks to Clay for distributing the fence rolls and then everyone who helped digging them out of snow. We could not have had the hanging party without this preparation work.

Trail maintenance is the toughest, but also the most appreciated community service our ski club provides. Thank you for contributing your time and effort to enable Nordic skiing in our community.

I'll echo Sanna's comments here and add that of course, "we're" appreciative of the volunteer effort from everyone, but to keep in mind that this is for everyone and is so vital to keep the whole initiative going.  I've been doing this for over 25 years now, and the day will come in which the torch will be handed over to others to run with, but hopefully we'll have our strong volunteer corps to keep things moving forward.  All the eager 20-, 30-, and even 40-something folks will be able to take things over seamlessly once I'm gone.

A BIG, HUGE(!) thank you especially goes out to all the super tough pioneer gals who took the reins and got so much done under super-tough circumstances.  Lynn, Sanna, Siobhan, Dina, etc. (big honorable mention Kevin R. on this too!)  -- we all appreciate all the scrambling, pivoting, and heavy lifting, literally, you all did.  You also got the new generation out and working on some of this too, which I think does actually build a lot of character, and is no easy process.  It's a lot of problem-solving and kind of a confusing mess in the best of conditions, but this year was extra special with the deep and sloppy snow.  Because of that, itt has been like a dysfunctional family trying to come together to get family affairs worked out while replacing our parents' broken boiler and sewers backing up.  Of course, this has never happened to me... I'm just speaking hypothetically here ;-)

Also, with all of this going on, the guys got out to get the trail packing going.  That's never easy the first time around.  We only have our Viking snowmobile for the time being, so there's additional processes to that.  Hopefully, we'll get things groomed this week.  It won't be perfect until the really cold core of winter hits, but there should be some good early season touring conditions once we make it around.  No promises just yet.

So, a BIG THANKS to everyone for coming out and making the season happen.  We're in pretty good shape and can breathe easier now that the big push to get the fencing up has been [mostly] accomplished.  There are a few things to touch up, but things look good.

Clay
