Last year, we stopped the aerial spraying of pesticides to control grasshoppers in the Chama Watershed. They're doing it again. NM Climate Justice is mobilizing supports to email Mr. Shawn R. Carson, USDA APHIS: shawn.r...@usda.gov. Today is the deadline. They prefer emails instead of signing a petition.

Here are the talking points -- you can cut and paste into your email, or compost your own.

Talking Points to help with email: * APHIS should not use aerial pesticide spraying on public lands and should instead implement more sustainable alternatives for grasshopper management. * * Aerial pesticide applications will indiscriminately and adversely impact a wide array of non-target species. * Meaningful consultation with Tribal Nations and Pueblos with ties to the land and the greater watershed area, must happen before any proposed insecticide sprays. * Watercourses must be protected from pesticide drift. * * It’s crucial for APHIS and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to increase transparency, involve the public sooner and publicly share planned spray boundaries on their websites before any contracts are solicited or implemented. * Carbaryl spray should NOT be an option. The BLM prohibits its use on public lands in Montana and the same policy should hold in New Mexico.

Another point you can make is that grasshoppers are part of the food chain. Poisoning them poisons birds and other higher predators and disrupt our ecological balance.
