Gold Medallist Jackie Silva Qualifies for FIVB Women's Beach Event
ACAPULCO, MEXICO (April 8, 1999) - With another day of record crowds for
the
FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour Qualification Tournament, Brazilian
Gold
Medallists Jackie Silva advanced to the 32-team Main Draw with her
partner Ana
Paula Connolly following the conclusion of play here Thursday in the
Mexican
Open.
With crowds exceeding 10,000 spectators for the second-straight day on
the
beach at Playa Tamarindos with near-perfect weather, eight women's teams
advanced to Friday's opening rounds of the Main Draw starting at 9 a.m.
(CDT).
Silva and Ana Paula lost their only match of the day, but still advanced
when
Brazilians Adriana Bento and Monica Paludo lost two matches Friday.
Silva won the Olympic Gold for Brazil with Sandra Pires in the women's
competition at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. Pires now plays with
Adriana
Samuel, who won the Silver medal with Monica Rodrigues in Atlanta. The
Mexican
Open is the first of nine FIVB events this season and also serves as an
Olympic
Qualification Tournament for the 2000 Sydney Games.
Also qualifying for the women's Main Draw were top-seeded Annette
Huygens
Tholen and Sarah Straton of Australia, sixth-seeded Annett Buckner-Davis
and
Jenny Johnson-Jordan of United States, ninth-seeded Cecile Rigaux and
Anabelle
Prawerman of France, 11th-seeded Solvi Byberg and Heidi Larsen of
Norway,
13th-seeded Barb Broen Ouellette and Christine Lussier of Canada,
18th-seeded
Ines Pianka and Jana Vollmer of Germany and 31st-seeded Monique Oliver

women's teams attempting to qualify for the Main Draw in the $340,000
Mexican
Open, the first of three combined tournaments with men on the FIVB Beach
Volleyball World Tour this season. The Mexican Open concludes Sunday
with the
semi-finals and championship matches starting at 10 a.m. Both Gold
Medal
matches will net the winning teams the $30,000 first-place price for the
men's
and women's winners.
The daughters of famous fathers in the United States, Buckner-Davis and
Johnson-Jordan defeated both Brazilian teams Thursday before scoring a
pair of
wins over Karolyn Kirby and Caren Kemner of the United States to advance
to the
Main Draw. The pair won all six of their qualifying matches.
Johnson-Jordan's
father is Rafer Johnson, who won Olympic medals in the decathlon in 1956
(Silver in Melbourne) and 1960 (Gold in Rome). Buckner-Davis" father
played
for the New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association.
Kirby, a winner of six FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour women's events,
missed
qualifying for her first-event international event. Kemner, an indoor
Olympian, is competing for the first-time on the beach after starring
for the
United States at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
The England tandem of Oliver/Coutts posted Thursday's biggest surprise
in the
women's competition. After losing their first match Wednesday, Oliver
and
Coutts won four-straight qualifying matches. The pair advanced to the
main
draw with a 15-13 win over Maria Galindo and Hilda Gaxiola of host
Mexico.
