Hello,

I'm hoping that somebody here has further information on the ancestors and
living relatives of Johan Edvin Liljebjelke.

Here's what I know about Johan:

Johan Edvin Liljebjelke, born 22 Dec 1867 in Stromstad, Sweden. Parents are
Martin Edvard Liljebjelke and Maria Olsdatter. He had brothers and sisters,
including Gustav Adolf, Edvard, Carl Anton, and Gustava Amalia. He was in
Norway for an unknown amount of time before emigrating to the U.S. in 1888,
but long enough to at least father a child in Norway.

Although he's not blood-related to me, he's the grandfather to a cousin of
mine here in the U.S., and I promised my cousin I would help.

I have been in touch with all of Johan's U.S. descendents (he emigrated to
New York in 1888 -- his descendents have changed their name to 'Bjelke'),
but other than the above information, these descendents know nothing more
about his ancestry and any living relatives in that area of Sweden.

Before I go try to determine his ancestry myself, I was hoping to save some
effort and see if this has already been done (is there such a thing like a
Norwegian 'bygdebok' for that part of Sweden?)

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hi, Jon
I've searched the Norwegian telephone directories ( I work with the
Norwegian Telecom "Telenor"), and the only person in Norway with the
family-name LILJEBJELKE is:
Anne Marie Liljebjelke
Haslerudv. 10
N-1624 GRESSVIK
Phone: (+47) 6932 8846

Gressvik is in the county "Østfold", if your reader can't read the
Norwegian letter, it's an O with a dash throug, and that's in the
south-east part of the country, on the border to the Swedish county
"Baahuslen", in wich you find Stromstad. In my opinion, it's quite
likely she's related to your Johan Edvin. Worth a try, isn't it?

I have also searced the Swedish database, and in the city Stromstad I
found two persons named "LILLIEBJELKE":
Mildred Lilliebjelke,
Dafto 2529, Stromstad, Sweden
Phone: (+46) 526-26078

Sigvard Lilliebjelke
Dafto 2528, Stromstad, Sweden
Phone: (+46) 526-60355.

I hope this can help you further on i your search.

I hope this has has been to some help for your friend. If you want more
information about John Edvin's family you sholud look him up in Gustaf
Elgenstierna's great book "Den introducerade adelns Ättartaflor" (The
genology of the introduced nobilty). It list EVERY swedsih nobleman and
woman at least after 1625, so you should also find some of his maternal
ancesters there aswell.

There are seven Lillebjelkes left in Sweden. For a complete list of living
Lillebjelke's in Sweden, please see the Svensk Adelskalender. That book
also lists an aditional six in Canada and one in the States:

By the way, if your friend can prove paternal ancestry through wedlock to
Johan Edvin he/she is a Swedish nobleman/woman entitled to carry the
Lilliebjelke's Coat of Arms. You can find a picture of it in Svensk
Adelskalender and an other in Elgenstierna.
