After the ceremony, it will be officially open for public use. All are welcome to attend.

3.  Neighborhood Resource Fair Hosts Candidates’ Corner

Would you like to get to know the candidates that are running for office in your district? You’ll have the opportunity at this year’s Neighborhood Resource Fair at the Candidates’ Corner, held on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Jacob Building, 401 Lakeside Dr.

There are five City Council seats that are open, and they are: District 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6.  District 5 and the At Large seats will open in two years.

By getting to know the candidates in your district, you can make informed decisions based on what is important to you and for our city.

Another way that you can do that is to go to the City’s Go Vote! Knoxville page to learn more about the candidates and review dates for the upcoming elections

4.  Get Your Teams Ready for Wiffleball

Mark your calendars! The Office of Neighborhood Empowerment is hosting its Annual Wiffleball Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Caswell Park, 401 Winona St. Join us for a day of fun, friendly competition, and community spirit!

6.  Save the Date: National Night Out is October 7

Mark your calendars; Knoxville neighborhoods are celebrating National Night Out (NNO) on Tuesday, Oct. 7, this year.  Neighborhood folks are encouraged to plan a way to acknowledge the good work of our first responders.

If you do hold an event, please contact Debbie Sharp at dsh...@knoxvilletn.gov with the following information:

  • Name of the Neighborhood
  • Contact Name:
  • Contact Email:
  • Contact Phone #:
  • The date of the event:
  • Event Time:
  • Event Location:
  • What do you plan to do?

In the past, neighborhoods have held chili-cookoffs, picnics, safety education events, porch lights on in honor of first responders, etc.

NNO, a national community building campaign, promotes police-community partnerships. You may also register with the national organization if you would like at National Association of Town Watch.

NNO enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing back a true sense of community. Furthermore, it provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances. The national day is the first Tuesday in August, but many states have moved to the first Tuesday in October because of the heat.

7.  LWV Hosts Candidate Forums

To better prepare voters for the primary election on Tuesday, Aug. 26, the League of Women Voters of Knoxville and Knox County (LWVKKC) is hosting candidate forums for Knoxville City Council candidates.

  • Tuesday, July 22, 6:30–8 p.m., Knoxville City Council Districts 2 and 3, at Knoxville Public Works Service Center, 3131 Morris Ave.
  • Thursday, July 24, 6:30–8 p.m., Knoxville City Council District 4, at St. James Episcopal Church of Knoxville, 1101 North Broadway St.
  • Tuesday, July 29, 2025, for Knoxville City Council Candidates in District 1, at South High Senior Living, 835 Tipton Ave.
  • There was a candidate forum for district 6 last week.
  • The following organizations are partnering with LWVKKC to provide the first two forums for the public: Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Alpha Mu Lambda Chapter, American Muslim Advisory Council, East Tennessee Society of Professional Journalists, Knoxville Area Urban League, Knoxville Branch of the NAACP, and the Voter Turnout Coalition.

LWVKKC is supporting the third forum for district 1, with the hosts being the South Knoxville Neighborhood and Business Coalition. Additional partners for that event include the South Knoxville Alliance and the Old Sevier Merchants Association.

Early voting begins Wednesday, Aug. 6.

LWVKKC is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that encourages informed and active participation in government and works to increase understanding of major public policy issues. Candidate forums sponsored by the League honor the League’s longstanding nonpartisan practices to ensure trust, respect, and fairness to all who participate. We use a standard set of guidelines for candidates, moderators, volunteers, and the audience.

8.  City Seeks Feedback to Improve Bicycle Network

The City of Knoxville seeks input from residents to update its Bicycle Facilities Plan and create a safer, more connected and more accessible biking network.

Residents will be able to contribute to the plan’s update by:

  • Taking this survey.
  • Attending the Public Open House next Tuesday, July 29, 4:30-6:30 p.m. at the Public Works Service Center, 3131 Morris Ave.

Both the survey and open house will let residents share feedback about biking conditions in Knoxville and identify areas where improvements are needed most, including routes or locations that need better connections or safety upgrades.

The current Bicycle Facilities Plan was developed in 2015 by a steering committee, City and Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) staff and consultants Toole Design Group and Kimley-Horn. It laid the foundation for making Knoxville a more bike-friendly city and created a map of existing infrastructure including greenways; painted, buffered and protected bike lanes; bike racks, maintenance stations and other facilities that make using a bicycle for transportation and recreation easier.

The update process, funded through the Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation, will make the plan current and align it with the City's Vision Zero goal of eliminating traffic fatalities on City-controlled roadways by 2040.

Visit the City’s website for more information.

9.  Plan to Attend the Kuumba Festival

The 2025 Kuumba Festival will take place on Friday, Aug. 1, from 12-10 p.m. in Market Square in downtown Knoxville.

There will be drum performances, dancing, food, vendors, and other live entertainment.

The Kuumba Festival is presented by African American Appalachian Arts, Inc. (AAAA), an arts organization that focuses on positive social and community development by utilizing creative methods of education through cultural artistic programming and development.

The Kuumba Festival (KUUMBA means Creativity in Key Swahili) was started in 1989 by local Knoxville artists and community activists who were looking to showcase local African American art and artists for the sole purpose of sharing, educating and exposing rich cultural art forms to the Knoxville community. This free event gives African American Appalachian Arts Inc. (AAAA) an avenue to reach out and service the Greater Knoxville community through the offering of cultural arts activities.
