9.  You Found an Orphaned Animal, Now What?

In Knoxville, we have an incredible variety of wildlife and biodiversity, and injured animals are often found by people just like you. Do you know what to do if you find an injured or orphaned animal? Do you know who to call?

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency  (TWRA) says it is illegal for unlicensed individuals to offer veterinary care or possess wildlife, as doing such can potentially be harmful to the animal and people in the household.

If you find an uninjured animal, TWRA says the best course of action is to leave it where you found it as many young animals that may appear orphaned are just waiting for their mother to return to them. This is often the case with deer, bird and rabbits. If the mother does not return to the baby or babies within 48 hours, that’s when someone can reach out to a licensed Tennessee wildlife rehabilitator through TWRA.

For specific information about how to help injured or abandoned animals in your neighborhood and how to contact a wildlife rehabilitator, please visit TWRA’s website.
