1.  Register Now for the Neighborhoods U.S.A. Conference

The Neighborhoods USA (NUSA) Conference will take place May 20-23 in Jacksonville, Florida, and the Office of Neighborhood Empowerment (ONE) would love to see you there!

Early bird registration is open through Monday, March 31, at a cost of $275 per attendee. Registration is $350 per attendee between Tuesday, April 1, and Saturday, May 10.

NUSA is a national, non-profit organization committed to building and strengthening neighborhood organizations. Created in 1975 to share information and experiences used to build stronger communities, NUSA continues to encourage networking and information-sharing to facilitate the development of partnerships among neighborhood organizations, government, and the private sector for the ultimate goal of strengthening every neighborhood.

There are numerous reasons for wanting to attend the NUSA Conference:
  • Network - The NUSA Conference attracts people from all over North America as well as abroad. Just about every type of neighborhood and organization is represented at a NUSA Conference.
  • Expand Knowledge Base - From grant writing, asset-based community development, assembling volunteers, using new tech to engage neighborhoods, leadership development – you name it – anything related to empowering and engaging neighborhoods will be discussed at the NUSA Conference.
  • Present Ideas – Neighbors do amazing work in our community and the NUSA Conference is a great way to showcase the best and brightest ideas that are making progress and change in our communities.
  • Develop Professionally - The NUSA Conference is not only an investment in oneself, but our community. The knowledge gained has benefited many communities across the nation and abroad both personally and professionally.
  • Reset - To be surrounded by people who do the same type of or similar work can have a reinvigorating effect. When one leaves a NUSA Conference, he or she will likely be inspired and eager to get back to work in their local community.

To register and learn more, please visit NUSA’s website.

7.  Participate in National Walking Day

National Walking Day is on Wednesday, April 2. The American Heart Association (AHA) has released their Activation Guide for the occasion.

The AHA has provided facts to motivate interested individuals to move more:
  • Walk more, Stress less - Walking is one of the simplest ways to get and stay active.
  • Check the stress – Money, work, and family responsibilities are leading sources of stress.
  • Make a move – One in four U.S. adults sits for longer than eight hours each day. Sitting for too long can hurt your physical and mental health.
  • Pets? Let’s! – When we see, touch, hear, or talk to our furry friends, we feel a sense of goodwill, joy, nurturing, and happiness.
  • Sweet dreams – Prioritize sleep and aim for seven to nine hours a night.

For more information on how to engage in National Walking Day and boost your heart health, visit the American Heart Association’s website.

If your neighborhood is going to participate in National Walking Day, we would love to hear about it and feature you in The Neighborly Notice.
8.  Tennessee Tree Day Is This Weekend

The Tennessee Environmental Council (TEC) is hosting Tennessee Tree Day this Saturday, March 29.

Tree reservations are now closed, but pickup details remain important for those who signed up. You will pick up your trees from your pick-up site on either Friday, March 28, or Saturday, March 29.

Every year, Tennessee Tree Day engages thousands of volunteers in a fun, family-friendly day event of planting native tree seedlings all across Tennessee. TEC partners with the Tennessee Department of Forestry and local nurseries to distribute native tree seedlings through the Keep Knoxville Beautiful network of volunteers and businesses.

Since 2007, Tennessee Tree Day has mobilized over 100,000 residents to plant more than one million native trees across Tennessee and neighboring states. Planting a native tree is a simple way to make your community a little greener.
9.  Keep Knoxville Beautiful Hosts South Knoxville Community Cleanup

Celebrate Earth Day by participating in the ninth annual South Knoxville Community Cleanup (SKCC), hosted by Keep Knoxville Beautiful (KKB), taking place on Saturday, April 12, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at Mary Vestal Park, 522 Maryville Pike.

The Community will be removing litter from South Knoxville roads, creeks, and parks. Participants of any age are welcome! We look forward to seeing those who live, work, or play in South Knoxville and anyone who wants to lend a helping hand.

There are four volunteer sign-up options: one for groups and three options are individuals. A group would need to have a minimum of five volunteers and the individual option you can choose your location: Mary Vestal Park, Goose Creek Cleanup, and Invasive Removal with Ijams.

KKB will provide the following equipment: litter pickers, gloves, safety vests, and trash bags.

KKB strongly recommends wearing long pants, and all volunteers must wear closed-toe shoes. Please bring your own sunscreen, bug protection, and water. The Community Cleanup is rain or shine, but in the case of severe weather, the rain date is set for Sunday, April 13, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
