1.  Neighborhood Achievement Award Nominations Due Thursday

The deadline to nominate your neighborhood for the Neighborhood Achievement Awards is this Friday, Feb. 3 at 4:30 p.m.  Don’t miss this opportunity to receive recognition for the work you and your neighbors accomplished in 2022.

What creative, interesting, resourceful, clever projects did your neighborhood organizations do last year?

Whether your organization is large or small, well established or brand new, your group is encouraged to apply for these awards, which showcase accomplishments by neighborhood groups during the 2022 calendar year.

To apply, go to the Office of Neighborhood Empowerment (ONE)’s website, complete the nomination form, and email it to Courtney Durrett at cdur...@knoxvilletn.gov, or mail it to the address below no later than 4:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3.  If you have questions, contact Courtney at 215-3456 or the above email.

Examples of accomplishments include but are not limited to:
  • Beautification and place-making projects, green spaces and community gardens, and other physical improvements to the neighborhood;
  • Projects, events, and activities that focus on connecting neighbors with one another, such as street fairs, potlucks, home tours, holiday celebrations, and neighbors helping neighbors;
  • New or ongoing communication efforts such as newsletters, social media, and phone tree networks; and
  • Activities involved in launching, reviving, or strengthening a neighborhood group.
New this year: Neighborhood Achievement Award recipients will receive a $100 prize (up from $75) and will be recognized at an invitation-only awards dinner in early March.

We are excited to see what creative things you achieved in 2022!

3.  Traffic Calming Educational Materials Available

Did you know that ONE has traffic calming educational materials available online?

The Education Toolbox is designed as support materials for a neighborhood-led, neighborhood-centric education campaign focused on your own neighbors’ driving habits as well as those who regularly drive through your neighborhood. Success will depend on you and your neighbors to create and manage an outreach effort that works for your neighborhood.

You can use these ideas on their own—before your neighborhood group applies for the Neighborhood Traffic Safety Program (NTSP)—or in conjunction with an active NTSP application.

For additional questions or more information about the Neighborhood Traffic Safety Program, please email Hayley Howard at hho...@knoxvilletn.gov.
4.  Youth Violence Prevention Week Grant Applications Due Thursday

The City of Knoxville Office of Community Safety seeks to provide grant funding to non-profit and community-based organizations that can provide services aimed at building awareness, education, and prevention of youth violence during National Youth Violence Prevention Week, April 24-28.  This work can be direct or indirect work with youth.

Any organization looking to provide programming centered on this topic is encouraged to apply. Grants awarded may range from $500-$3,000.

Applications must be turned in by 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 2 in order to be considered. For more information, visit the Office of Community Safety website, or call or Mustafa Ali-Smith at 865-215-4429 or email mali...@knoxvilletn.gov.
5.  HND Holds Public Input Meeting Tonight

The City of Knoxville Housing and Neighborhood Development Department (HND) seeks residents’ feedback on its Year Four Annual Action Plan Update for the City’s Five Year Consolidated Plan. A public meeting will be held today, Tuesday, Jan. 31, at 6 p.m., at the City’s Public Works Building, 3131 Morris Avenue, to discuss and hear input for the 2023-2024 plan.

The Five Year Consolidated plan describes how the City intends to use three types of federal funds allocated by the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development (HUD): Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), HOME Investment Partnerships Act, and Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG). The Annual Action Plan Update accommodates for changes in community conditions and needs, funding resources, etc. that impact how federal funds should be allocated locally for the program year starting July 1, 2023.

At this meeting, City staff will:
  • Discuss anticipated HUD and local funding for the 2023-2024 program year;
  • Review priority goals and objectives from its 2020-2024 Five Year Consolidated Plan;
  • Provide a description of unmet needs and gaps identified through consultation meetings with stakeholders, regarding: Non-housing community development needs (including economic development, neighborhood stabilization, public services, public facility and infrastructure improvements); homelessness needs; and affordable housing needs;
  • Describe the process for developing the draft 2023-2024 Annual Action Plan, including how the public may provide input; and
  • Inform agencies on how they may apply for grant funding to meet priority goals and objectives.
Public input is required for HUD funding, but it’s also important to our city’s future to hear from residents about the needs and unmet needs concerning affordable housing and community development activities in our community. If you cannot make the meeting and would like to give input or have questions, please contact Linda Rust at lr...@knoxvilletn.gov or P.O. Box 1631, Knoxville, TN 37901.

The draft Annual Action Plan will be available for public review and comment March 31 to April 30.

6.  Applications Open For City’s Community Agency Grant Funding

The City of Knoxville is now accepting applications from local non-profit organizations for grant funding available through the Community Agency Grant (CAG) program for Fiscal Year 2023-24, which begins July 1, 2023.

All completed and signed applications must be submitted by mail, in person, or electronically by 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23. Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

CAG funding has two categories “Arts and Culture" and “Community and Social Services.”

Arts and Culture includes museums, arts organizations, and groups that present and promote the performing arts and cultural experiences from a variety of heritages and backgrounds. Community and Social Services include organizations that meet a variety of community needs. Application forms are posted at KnoxvilleTN.gov/citygrants.

During Mayor Indya Kincannon’s administration, Council has approved more than $5.3 million in CAG funding to support dozens of arts & culture partners, non-profit service providers, youth-serving organizations, and other local partners that serve and connect Knoxville residents.

Applicants are asked to illustrate how their activities and programs help the City meet its core goals and priorities: public safety; healthy and connected neighborhoods; sustainability and thriving businesses; and good jobs.

Applying agencies must operate within Knoxville city limits, be certified as a nonprofit for a minimum of five years, and be registered as a charitable organization with Tennessee Secretary of State or have a current exemption.
