1.  Cumberland Estates Neighborhood Yard Sale is Rescheduled

Cumberland Estates West Neighborhood Watch has rescheduled their annual yard sale to next Saturday, June 14, from 8 a.m.–3 p.m.

  • Dozens of homes participate in this sale with lots of home goods, garden\yard equipment, collectibles, furniture, and just about anything else you can imagine. Signs will be posted along the main roads to direct you to the sales. The neighborhood is located behind the Cumberland Estates Shopping Center at 5737 Western Ave.

Cumberland Estates is a residential neighborhood known for its innovative architectural designs and its role in “research housing” during the mid-20th century.

Many homes in Cumberland Estates reflect the popular mid-century modern style, showcasing sleek designs and functional layouts, and the neighborhood exemplifies how planned communities evolved to meet the housing needs of a growing population.

2.  Town Hall East Hosts Candidate Forum

Town Hall East will host a Candidate Forum on Monday, June 23, for the candidates running for Knoxville City Council in the two districts included in the Town Hall East boundaries, District 4 and District 6. The location will be Rust Fellowship Hall behind Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 4904 Asheville Hwy.

Since voting in the August 26 election will be strictly by district, they have separated the forum into two sessions. The session for District 4 will begin at 7 p.m., and the session for District 6 will begin at 8 p.m.

All three candidates from District 4 and four of the five candidates from District 6 have indicated they will participate.

They hope that residents in these districts will attend and learn more about the candidates to make an informed decision.

3.  NAC Meets Tomorrow

The Neighborhood Advisory Council (NAC) will meet tomorrow, June 11, from 4:30-6 p.m. in the Community Room of the Public Works Building, 3131 Morris Ave.

NAC members will hear from Mayor Kincannon about the proposed local option sales tax.

Consisting of neighborhood leaders from around the city, the NAC serves in an advisory and partnership capacity to:

  • Give advice and feedback on the programs and policies of the Office of Neighborhood Empowerment,
  • Bring neighborhood issues and concerns to the attention of the Mayor and City Administration,
  • Propose responses and solutions to the Administration to address these concerns; and
  • Serve as a sounding board for city initiatives and proposals affecting neighborhoods.

The NAC advises only to the Mayor and the City Administration and does not adviseCity Council or other  appointed bodies. All are welcome to attend.

8.  Mayor Signs Mayor’s Monarch Pledge

Knoxville’s Mayor, Indya Kincannon, has signed the Mayor’s Monarch Pledge to help protect the monarch butterfly.

City staff will be working collaboratively to create spaces for the monarch butterfly to feed, live, and stop off while migrating north or south.

City staff are working on three goals at this time. The Public Service Department has created a pilot meadow with plants that the monarch butterfly needs to survive. The Office of Neighborhood Empowerment will be engaging with neighborhood groups, HOAs, etc., to identify opportunities to plant monarch gardens. We also worked collaboratively to create guidelines for a natural landscape if you want to promote monarchs and other pollinators in your garden.  See our website for these guidelines.

If your neighborhood is interested in creating a monarch garden, please let us know by contacting Debbie Sharp at dsh...@knoxvilletn.gov.
