8.  Tennessee Tree Day 2025

Keep Knoxville Beautiful (KKB) is partnering with the Tennessee Environmental Council (TEC) for Tennessee Tree Day 2025, taking place on Friday, March 14, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at 5100 Martin Mill Pike.

Every year, Tennessee Tree Day engages thousands of volunteers in a fun, family-friendly day event of planting native tree seedlings all across Tennessee. TEC also works with TN Department of Forestry and other nurseries to supply native tree seedlings to citizens across the state through KKB network of volunteer partners and local businesses.

Since 2007, Tennessee Tree Day has mobilized over 100,000 residents to plant more than one million native trees across Tennessee and neighboring states. Plant a native tree and make your community a little greener.

If you are interested in reserving some trees, please visit TEC’s website. The last day to reserve trees is Sunday, March 2. You will pick up your trees on Friday, March 14, or Saturday, March 15.

11.  How Does Cholesterol Impact Heart Health?

Cholesterol plays a huge role in a person’s health. So, what is cholesterol? What does it do?

Cholesterol is a waxy substance found throughout the body. It isn’t harmful unless levels become too high. Your body needs it to build cells and make vitamins and other hormones. However, too much cholesterol can pose a problem.

Cholesterol comes from two sources. Your liver makes all the cholesterol you need. The remainder of the cholesterol in your body comes from foods from animals. For example, meat, poultry, and dairy products all contain dietary cholesterol.

Those same foods can also be high in saturated and trans fats. These fats can increase the cholesterol in your body. For some people, this added cholesterol means they go from a normal cholesterol level to one that is unhealthy.

The two types of cholesterol are: LDL cholesterol, which is bad, and HDL, which is good. Too much of the bad kind, or not enough of the good kind, increases the risk that cholesterol will slowly build up in the inner walls of the arteries, such as those that feed the heart and brain.

When it comes to cholesterol, remember:
  • Check your cholesterol levels. It’s key to know your numbers and assess your risk.
  • Change your diet and lifestyle to help improve your levels.
  • Control your cholesterol, with help from your health care professional if needed.

Regular exercise can lower cholesterol and can improve your heart health.

For more information about cholesterol and other topics related to heart health, please visit the American Heart Association’s website.
12.  Ramadan Begins Friday

The first night of the holy month of Ramadan will begin on Friday, Feb. 28, and goes through Saturday, March 29.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and it is observed each year by Muslims worldwide as a time of fasting, prayer, community, charity, and reflection.

Ramadan lasts from one crescent moon to the next, and fasting is done daily from sunrise to sunset. The final day of Ramadan is called Eid al-Fitr and is celebrated with an amazing, lavish feast.

To learn more about Ramadan, view local prayer times, or volunteer opportunities, please visit Muslim Community of Knoxville’s website.
