Downtown trash and recycling will also run on its regular schedule throughout the Memorial Day weekend.

The City's five recycling drop-off centers will be open, but the Goodwill attendant will not be present to receive donations of household goods. Please hold donations until an attendant is present.

3.  Amherst Helmbolt Held Second Annual Spring Fling: Recap

Amherst-Helmbolt Community Association held their second annual Spring Fling on Friday, May 17, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 pm, at the Amherst Grocery Store parking lot.

It was a fun-filled event for neighbors, communities, and children of all ages. There were popular food trucks like Taco Mafia and even sweet dessert trucks like Sno Krazy. And the best part? It was free to attend. There was a guest appearance from Knoxville Fire Department giving informative demonstrations on CPR and the importance of being a Neighbor Saver.

It definitely was a fun, family-friendly event, and everyone there hopes to see more friendly faces next year.

4.  Honor Fountain City Day in the Park

Fountain City Town Hall is pleased to present Honor Fountain City Day in the Park on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at Fountain City Park, 5345 N. Broadway.

This free Memorial Day community celebration will honor our veterans and essential workers. The theme of the event is “Honoring All of Our Essential Workers.” There will be live musical entertainment, free children’s games with prizes, exhibits, and craft and food vendors throughout the day. Ashley Adams, host of B97.5’s Morning Show, will give the Keynote Address, and John Becker, WBIR Channel 10, will present during the Community Awards Ceremony.

This Memorial Day celebration began in 1975, but was paused for four years due to the pandemic.

In case of rain, the program will be held in the Lions Club building. For more information contact Jamie Rowe at ombr...@aol.com or visit www.fountaincitytownhall.org.

10.  What is Memorial Day About?

Memorial Day marks an unofficial kick-off to summer, but the holiday has more meaning behind it other than a day off of work and cook outs. Similar to Veteran’s Day, (which celebrates all veterans), Memorial Day honors our military, specifically the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military. Initially, it was a day to honor fallen soldiers of the Civil War which was originally called Decoration Day, according to www.history.com, but that changed during World War I.

We now celebrate and remember all military who have lost their lives defending our country. Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May.

Tons of stores will have big sale events, banks will be closed, and parcel shipping will be paused or delayed. It can also be important to take this time to remember those who lost their lives fighting for our freedoms, while you enjoy a sale and/or a cook out.

The City of Knoxville offices will be closed, that includes the Office of Neighborhood Empowerment.
