4. Line of Sight Problems? Call 311
Line of sight problems refer to situations where a driver's view of the road and other vehicles is obstructed by the presence of shrubs, signs, parked vehicles, etc., potentially leading to accidents. This is typically caused by limited visibility, obstructing
views of oncoming traffic, or pedestrians.
The City staff can help find a remedy to the Line-of-sight issue by clearing vegetation, evaluating if a traffic signal or sign is needed, implementing parking restrictions, etc.
If you are experiencing any issues in city intersections, you can call
311. The City of Knoxville’s 311 service is committed to providing the highest level of service and satisfaction. You can submit a request by calling 311 or using the free My Knoxville app, which allows you to report issues such as potholes, streetlight
problems, traffic signal issues, parking concerns, and more.

5. Short-Term Rentals – Things to Know
You might have heard the phrase “short-term rentals” in conversation recently, and you might be wondering what exactly that means. So what is a short-term rental (STR)? STRs include listings booked through online platforms, such as Airbnb and Home Away, by
which people rent out part or all of their property for less than 30 days at a time.
To operate a STR in the city, a permit is required. Applications for STR unit permits and annual renewals are accepted and issued through the Business Tax Office.
The City of Knoxville’s STR ordinance took effect in Jan. of 2018. In Jan. of 2019, the State of Tennessee’s ordinance went into effect and defined some aspects of what and how local governments were allowed to regulate short-term rentals. Therefore, the City
operates according to the State of Tennessee’s ordinance.
The City contracts with Host Compliance, a company that specializes in tracking and identifying Short-Term Rental listings. Host Compliance provides regular reports of Short-Term Rental activity in the City of Knoxville compared against properties with Short-Term
Rental Permits.
City officials notify any non-compliant property owners of the ordinance and encourage them to seek a permit. Property owners who do not comply will be subject to a citation.
Also included with the Host Compliance service is a 24-hour hotline for people to call with any complaints or concerns about Short-Term Rental operations. Callers should indicate that the property is being used as a Short-Term Rental. You can reach the hotline
at any time of day or night by calling 865-337-8275.
Comments or questions about the City's ordinance can be sent to
ST...@KnoxvilleTN.gov.
Additional information about STRs can be found on the City’s
website. |

9. Native Plant Myth Busting
Have you ever heard any of these
common misconceptions about native plants?
Native plants are:
-
weedy and unattractive
-
difficult to grow and attract pests
-
only suitable for naturalistic gardens
-
don't provide year-round interest
-
less effective at controlling soil erosion
-
less beneficial than exotics for wildlife
It is time to debunk these myths! Native plants are not only beautiful but also vital for our ecosystems. They offer a variety of benefits, including:
-
Supporting wildlife: Providing food and shelter for pollinators, birds, and other beneficial insects.
-
Conserving water: Adapting to local climate conditions and requiring less water once established.
-
Reducing maintenance: Thriving in natural conditions and requiring no chemical intervention.
Let’s add some native plants to your yard. Check out the City’s
Community Wildlife Habitat website to find lists of native wildflowers, grasses, and shrubs for our area. Check the top grey bar for those lists.
