This free event is packed with valuable resources, services, and connections to support you and your family including health screenings, job opportunities, educational programs, and more. Pre-registering ensures you don’t miss out and gives you more chances to win one of our amazing door prizes.

We can’t wait to see you there!
2.  No Newsletter Next Week

The Office of Neighborhood Empowerment will not produce a newsletter next Tuesday, Aug. 12.  But don’t worry, we will be back up and running on Tuesday, Aug. 19.

3.  NAC Meets August 13

The Neighborhood Advisory Council (NAC) will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 13, from 4:30-6 p.m. at the Public Works Service Center, 3131 Morris Ave.

Council members will hear from Boyce Evans, the Chief Operating Officer of the City of Knoxville, who will share insights on the City budget, including where money comes from and how it’s allocated.

All are welcomed to attend.

The City of Knoxville ensures meaningful access to City programs, services, and activities to comply with Civil Rights Title VI and ADA Title II laws and reasonably provides translation, interpretation, modifications, accommodations, alternative formats, auxiliary aids and services.

To request language translation services, contact the City’s Human Resources Department at tit...@knoxvilletn.gov or 865-215-3100. For disability accommodations, contact City ADA Coordinator Stephanie Brewer Cook at sc...@knoxvilletn.gov or 865-215-2034.
4.  Serve on the Neighborhood Advisory Council

Are you or someone you know interested in serving your neighborhood and the greater community while learning more about City operations? The City of Knoxville is currently seeking applicants for seats on the Neighborhood Advisory Council (NAC) for the Jan. 2026 through Dec. 2028 term.

Open seats include:
  • Seat 1-A
  • Seat 2-A
  • Seat 3-B
  • Seat 6-B
  • At Large Seat B
Some of these seats are currently held by neighbors who are eligible to reapply, so not all seats may be appointed by new appointees.  Applications are due on Thursday, Aug. 14, by 4:30 p.m.

The NAC consists of neighborhood leaders from around the city and serves in an advisory and partnership capacity to:
  • Give advice and feedback on the programs and policies of the Office of Neighborhood Empowerment,
  • Bring neighborhood issues and concerns to the attention of the Mayor and City Administration,
  • Propose to the Administration responses and solutions to address these concerns; and
  • Serve as a sounding board for city initiatives and proposals affecting neighborhoods.
The NAC meets the second Wednesday of each month except July and December. As a matter of policy, it does not advise Knoxville City Council, Knoxville-Knox County Planning, and other elected and appointed bodies. Members are appointed by the Mayor, confirmed by City Council and serve three-year terms, limited to two consecutive terms. Members may serve again after a one-year break.

For more information about how to apply for or recommend someone for a seat, please visit the City’s website or contact Debbie Sharp at dsh...@knoxvilletn.gov.

Over 70 neighborhood leaders have graduated from this class in the past. We consider anyone helping in a neighborhood organization or starting an organization to be a leader.

Participants receive resources including a 3-ring binder full of numerous “how-to” articles on various aspects of creating and sustaining community-based organizations.

10.  First Day of Early Voting Kicks Off Wednesday

Early voting for the upcoming City election begins on Wednesday, Aug. 6, and continues through Thursday, Aug. 21, giving residents in the city the opportunity to cast their ballots ahead of the upcoming election. Early voting provides residents with a convenient and secure way to exercise their right to vote. During early voting, you may vote at any of the six locations. Take advantage and avoid some of the lines!

Voters can check their registration status and find polling places at Go Vote! Knoxville.

For those who are voting in person, a valid photo ID is required. Absentee ballots are also available for eligible voters who request them no later than Saturday, Aug. 16, (10 days prior to election day).

Civic leaders will remind residents “Your vote is your voice. Make it count!”
11.  Knox County Schools Start Aug. 7

Knox County Schools begin on Thursday, Aug. 7.  As students return to class, please take extra care while driving near bus stops and school zones.

We may be a bit out of practice slowing down in school zones, so please don’t forget that our little neighbors need you to pay attention. We want to keep them safe this school year.

Also, if you are so inclined, all schools in our district need assistance. If you would like to give, contact the school closest to you and see what the needs are.

Some neighborhoods are doing school supplies drives currently and will be giving school supplies, individually wrapped snacks, cleaning supplies, etc. This can help the schools, teachers, and most of all, our children.

Thank you to all the neighbors and neighborhood groups that have been donating.
