1.  City Offers Hands-Only CPR and Stop the Bleed Workshop

February is American Heart Month, and the City is offering opportunities for residents to support community safety efforts and be prepared for emergencies.

A Hands-Only CPR and Stop the Bleed workshop, taught by certified KFD trainers, will be held Saturday, Feb. 25, from 9-11 a.m. at Larry Cox Senior Center, 3109 Ocoee Trail.

To register, contact Debbie Sharp at dsh...@knoxvilletn.gov or 865-215-4382. Space is limited.

Your neighborhood group, community group, sorority/fraternity, or church group may request that KFD hold this training workshop at one of your monthly meetings or a special event. We already have requests from several neighborhoods for this opportunity. This training can help save lives!

Workshops are a collaboration between the City’s Office of Community Safety (OCS), Knoxville Fire Department (KFD), and Office of Neighborhood Empowerment (ONE). Several neighbors and City staff members attended the first workshop on Feb. 20; watch this WVLT news report to see more. https://www.wvlt.tv/2023/02/21/knoxville-organizations-host-life-saving-workshop/

Please be aware: These are not certification classes. If you need certification for a job, please reach out to other groups, like the American Heart Association, to get certified in CPR and First Aid.

The City of Knoxville ensures meaningful access to City programs, services, and activities to comply with Civil Rights Title VI and ADA Title II laws and reasonably provides: translation, interpretation, modifications, accommodations, alternative formats, auxiliary aids and services.

5.  KAT Requests Feedback on Reimagined Draft Network

Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) seeks public input on the latest draft of the KAT Reimagined project. Residents are encouraged to attend one of the in-person public meetings taking place this week to provide feedback.
  • Thursday, Feb. 23, 5-7 p.m., 301 East Church Ave.
  • Saturday, Feb. 25, 11 a.m.-1 p.m., 301 East Church Ave.
The KAT Reimagined study is looking at KAT’s current service and how they can make it better by balancing the area they cover with how well they cover that area.

This study began by asking the community how KAT services can encourage transit use in Knoxville and make it work effectively for as many people as possible.

Based on feedback received through an extensive public input process, the Knoxville Transportation Authority (KTA) has directed transit consultants to develop a draft service plan in which 70% of KAT’s resources are focused on ridership goals, and 30% on coverage goals. That draft service plan is now available for public review and comment through the end of the month.

Visit the study’s website to read the Draft Network Report, see the routes that are proposed for changes and provide your feedback.

If you are unable to attend an in-person meeting, please take the online survey.
6. City of Knoxville Seeks Input on Combating Life-Altering Crashes

The City of Knoxville is committed to developing a plan to combat life-altering crashes—crashes that result in fatalities and serious injuries—in Knoxville.

Using the internationally acknowledged Vision Zero principles, the City’s Office of Sustainability is evaluating high-injury networks and community concerns in an effort to eliminate life-altering crashes. As part of this work, the City’s Vision Zero (VZ) team wants to hear from neighbors!

If your neighborhood association, social club, church group, workplace, or other entity would like to learn more, invite a member of our Vision Zero team to your next regularly scheduled meeting. The facilitator will conduct a 30- to 45-minute discussion about your traffic safety concerns. Email your request to sustain...@knoxvilletn.gov.

For more information on the City’s plans to work towards the elimination of fatalities and serious injuries caused by crashes, visit www.KnoxvilleTN.gov/VisionZero/ and follow Vision Zero Knoxville on Facebook.

7.  Community Input Needed for Urban Forest Master Plan

Knoxville is investing in trees for the long term, and your input is needed!

The tree canopy in Knoxville has seen many changes in the last decade, and is vulnerable to threats from disease, pests, the changing climate, city population and development growth. For this reason, the Knoxville community is embarking on the development of an Urban Forest Master Plan. This plan will be spearheaded by Trees Knoxville, and in partnership with the City of Knoxville, the State of Tennessee, Keep Knoxville Beautiful and the Knoxville Utilities Board.

As a majority of the tree canopy in Knoxville is located on privately owned land, any progress in improving and growing the canopy will require a true community effort.

For more information about the Knoxville Urban Forest Master Plan, find out how to get involved, or provide your feedback online, please visit https://www.knoxvilletreeplan.org.

If you would like Kasey Krouse to attend your next neighborhood meeting to discuss this effort and receive your community’s input in person, please email him at kkr...@knoxvilletn.gov.
8.  Ijams Nature Center Announces Weed Wrangle 2023

Mark your calendars! Weed Wrangle Knoxville 2023, coordinated by Ijams Nature Center, will be Saturday, March 11, 9:30 a.m.-12 noon at the Citizens Cemetery and Collier Preserve, located at 1038 Fuller Ave.

Each year since 2020, Ijams has coordinated Weed Wrangle Knoxville, a local effort that is part of a nationwide event to build awareness of the threat non-native invasive plants pose to our ecosystem. In addition to building awareness, this event is about putting boots on the ground and tackling this problem throughout our community. Weed Wrangle Knoxville rescues public parks and green spaces from invasive species through hands-on removal of especially harmful trees, vines and flowering plants.

Volunteers are needed.  Registration will open soon.  Registration and more information can be found at www.Ijams.org/weed-wrangle.

Volunteers at Ijams are critical to the success of the Natural Resource Management Department, particularly as it relates to the effort of removing non-native invasive plants from the landscape. The Ijams Weed Warriors, a group of highly trained volunteers dedicated to removing invasive plants, and other Ijams volunteers helped clear invasive plants from seven acres in 2022. Non-native invasive plants represent the largest threat to forest health and the biodiversity that makes Knoxville such a special place to call home!

Ijams Nature Center is comprised of mostly city-owned land and their mission is to encourage stewardship of the natural world by providing an urban greenspace for people to learn about and enjoy the outdoors through engaging experiences. This urban greenspace comprises 318 acres of mostly forested land that contributes to Knoxville's urban forest canopy.

For more information about Ijams and their programs, contact Ben Nanny at bna...@ijams.org.  He is also an ex officio member of the City of Knoxville’s Tree Board.

9.  Hall of Fame Drive Cleanup Set for Feb. 25

Neighbors with a passion for litter-free streets and rights-of-way are invited to join a volunteer cleanup of Hall of Fame Drive this Saturday, Feb. 25, 8:30 a.m. - 12 noon.

Volunteers will meet up at 457 Hall of Fame Drive SE to pick up supplies. The cleanup will focus on the blocks of Hall of Fame that intersect with Magnolia Ave. These stretches of road catch a lot of trash from James White Parkway and are a major eyesore this time of year. Local businesses along HOF have been asked to clean up their front yards in anticipation of this event. Let’s work together to make Hall of Fame Drive live up to its name!

Supplies (trash bags, safety vests, gloves and litter pickers) are being provided by Keep Knoxville Beautiful. Wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. Please bring your own water.

Free doughnuts will be available to fuel early birds -- while supplies last!

RSVP and share on Facebook. Call or text 865-951-3733 for information.
