1.  Neighbors Honored at Neighborhood Awards Dinner

Neighbors and neighborhoods were honored last week at the Office of Neighborhood Empowerment’s inaugural Neighborhood Awards Dinner. This new event celebrating the good work of neighbors and neighborhoods was inspired by the luncheon and awards portion of the Neighborhood Conference held by this department for many years. Last Thursday’s dinner was special banquet for all nominees and winners, several City Council representatives and Mayor Indya Kincannon, who presented awards.

For the first time, we celebrated the previous year’s Wiffleball Champions.  Congratulations to Westwood Homeowners Association!

We also honored the two neighborhoods participating in Healthy Knoxville, a program that encourages eating healthy, exercising, smoking cessation, and improving our mental health.  Westwood Homeowners Association received a Silver Award, and West Hills Community Association received a Platinum Award for all of their projects that make their neighborhoods healthier places to live.

Several neighborhood organizations received Neighborhood Achievement Awards.  Forest Heights Neighborhood Association, Historic Fourth and Gill Neighborhood Organization, Parkridge Community Organization, Timbercrest Neighborhood Association, Western Heights Residents Association, and West Hills Community Association will receive $100 from the City to further their projects.

This year’s Officer Liaison of the Year award went to Officer Seth Blaine, who served as Officer Liaison for Historic Fourth & Gill Neighborhood Association. Officer Blaine received a standing ovation from Fourth & Gill neighbors and a plaque from ONE.

A slate of amazing nominees for the Diana Conn Good Neighbor of the Year award challenged the committee to name just one winner. However, Neighborhood Advisory Council members Emma Ellis-Cosigua, Monty Howard, and Brent Waugh ultimately chose Eric Johnson of the Vestal Community Organization

Other nominees were:  Amy Hathaway – Forest Heights Neighborhood Association, Jeff Johnson – Historic Fourth & Gill Neighborhood Association, Mae Moody (posthumous) – Murray Drive/Wilkerson Road Neighborhood Watch, and Margareth Olsson – Old North Knoxville, Inc. Enjoy this video to learn more about these neighbors and their accomplishments.

These groups and individuals go the extra mile to improve their neighborhoods without seeking recognition. That is all the more reason we should recognize their good work.

Be on the lookout for more information about the Neighborhood Resource Fair to be held in August of this year.  This new event will take the place of the booth portion of The Neighborhood Conference.
2.  Neighborhood Advisory Council Meets Tomorrow

The Neighborhood Advisory Council (NAC) will meet tomorrow Wednesday, March 7, from 4:30-6 p.m. in the City County Building’s Small Assembly Room, 400 Main Street.

This session will be set aside for the group to bring up topics that are important to their neighborhood groups and/or districts. The group will spend time bringing up these different topics and then will take time to rank them in order of importance. From this list, the Office of Neighborhood Empowerment (ONE) works to bring these speakers/presenters to the table.

All are welcome to join. If you have any questions about the NAC, please contact Debbie Sharp at dsh...@knoxvilletn.gov or 215-4382.

3.  Sign Up for ONE’s First Annual Kickball Tournament

The Office of Neighborhood Empowerment (ONE) is excited to host the first-ever Neighborhood Kickball Tournament on Saturday, April 22.  The deadline to sign up is Thursday, April 6, at 4:30 p.m.

The structure and rules will be similar to our Wiffleball Tournament. If your neighborhood is interested in participating, email Courtney Durrett for more details.

We look forward to some friendly neighborhood competition!
4.  Health Department Offers Free Heart Health Series

The Knox County Health Department (KCHD) is teaching a two-part Heart Health Series on Thursdays, March 9 and 16, from 6-7 p.m.

Classes will be taught in-person at the KCHD, 140 Dameron Ave., in the Community Room.

Registration is required; please call 865-215-5170 to sign up. Classes are free, and all residents are welcome.
5.  Dealing with the December Freeze

Are you noticing that you have evergreen shrubs that were damaged during December 22-23 hard freeze? Do you have a shrub that turned black on most of the leaves?

In just a matter of hours, Knoxville’s temperatures plummeted by nearly 40 degrees, and surprisingly, these frigid temperatures remained below 15 degrees for another 32 hours! This chill certainly caught many of our plants by surprise.

The City of Knoxville Tree Board thought they would share a new publication to help folks best determine how to handle this holiday freeze event. Read more about the freeze event and what you can do here.

6.  KUB Offers Community Expo

Would you like to learn more about Knoxville Utilities Board, what services they offer, what resources they have available to customers, as well as job opportunities? If so, you will want to attend KUB’s First Community Expo on Wednesday, March 22, from 12 noon-7 p.m. at The Change Center, 203 Harriet Tubman St.

You can learn about ways to go green, customer assistance programs, saving energy, when fiber internet will be available in your area, and more.

Attendees are encouraged to pre-register here: https://www.kub.org/kub-community-expo/
